You Won’t Believe What We Had to Lift Over Michigan Avenue…

Chicago doesn’t stop moving, especially around the historic The Congress Plaza Hotel & Convention Center.

Our team was recently hired to hoist and set (2) new cooling towers at the iconic Congress Hotel in downtown Chicago. With Michigan Avenue traffic, tight working conditions, and the challenges that come with protecting a historic structure, this project required extensive coordination, engineered planning, and precise ex*****on from start to finish.

From crane placement strategy and lift sequencing to safety planning with the customer and surrounding crews, every detail had to be dialed in before a single pick was made.

The result: another complex downtown Chicago project completed safely, efficiently, and with excellence by the Stevenson team.

That Doppler Radar you’ve seen on the Lockport water tower? Yeah… that one.

220 feet in the air, watching everything for years. Until the day it had to come down.

A 550-ton crane stepped in, counterweight rolling in across four separate loads just to hold the line. The jib kicked out and angled to clear the structure clean. From over 100 feet out, that 8,000-pound radar had one path, down, smooth and controlled. On the ground, our Manitou MTA1055 kept everything tight, staged, and moving with purpose.

We rolled in Friday night. Built under the lights. Made the picks Saturday. Gone by Sunday.

Local 150 Operating Engineers handled it from first setup to final breakdown without a hitch.
