This 740ix came in to my shop with pressure cuts in the block where the lower packing inserts. As the block is no longer available, I used a patching putty that is good for 5000 psi to fill in the damage. After some sanding with fine emery cloth, I was able to save the block and repack the pump. This was a first for me, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Hello friends and followers, today I want to talk a little bit about spray guns.
What you see here is a needle out of a Graco Silver Plus airless spray gun. This particular gun is off a Graco Line Lazer III 3900.

You can see the ball on the end of the needle is worn with pitting and it's no longer smooth. As the ball needs to seat against the carbide seat in the diffuser on the end of the gun, this needle will no longer hold pressure.

When your gun spits, it's because your needle is not seating against the seat. Debris or wear will both cause this issue. A quick repack and pressure test, and this gun is back in business!

This customer had problems with his inlet ball repeatedly getting blocked with debris. At first we thought it was a product issue, then after a few cleanings I opened up the suction tube to find this...
This was paint that had lined his hard tube after years of use and poor cleaning. Eventually it came loose and was partially blocking the flexible suction tube after folding in half.
New soft suction tube, and a good cleaning and he's up and running again.

The new year comes with many changes, one of the more recent changes is the addition of this sweet girl to the shop.

Say hello to Mildred. She's a 7/8 year old rescue I found wondering outside the shop. She must have been outside for sometime, because she had a lot of health problems that our vet quickly addressed.

She's settled in quickly to the good life in a heated shop with 3 meals a day, water, 2 beds, and plenty of pets. Don't let her resting grumpy face fool you, she's very happy!

You'll see regular updates from Mildred, as she is now our efficiency supervisor! She runs a tight ship!

Tis the season of, can you squeeze in a few more repairs before the end of the year?

Late this summer, early fall I was down below 10 pumps to repair for the first time in 8 years. I had hustled and finally gotten ahead and thought to myself "I might be able to get a few home/shop repairs completed this season. Well, it didn't last long....
Here are a few winter tips;

1. It doesn't matter if you have liquid in your pump that won't freeze, if you have an electronic pressure control your sensor needs to be kept above 40°. Pump saver, RV antifreeze, paint thinner etc. they will keep your pump from developing corrosion or rust, but you must keep your sensor warm.

2. Now is a great time to get your maintenance caught up, stock up on tips and filters, and get your equipment into storage mode. Top off your fluids, add stabilizer to your fuel, and fog your carburetor.

3. If you are worried about getting invoices for work/repairs on your equipment before the end of the year.... Have your shop write you up a deposit towards your repairs and pay the bill. You can square up after the beginning of the new year.

4. Now is a great time to check in with your coatings rep to see what new products are on the shelf and try them out in your shop before the spring.

Have a great December and a Merry Christmas!

This piston rod is out of a new machine, only a few months old. The streaking on the piston rod and the piston rod guide that's almost obliterated are both tell-tale signs of friction heat. The kind that comes from running your machine with no piston l**e.

Pay attention here, proper preventative maintenance is crucial to keep your machines running in top shape. I never enjoy seeing these things from customers equipment. It means the premium they paid for their equipment is not paying off as much as it should. Unnecessary repair that could have been prevented with regular maintenance is frustrating, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Clean your filters weekly at minimum, more often if you are using builder grade coating. Make sure your piston rod is always wet with piston l**e, and clean your machines well regularly.

This pump was run away past the service time. There were multiple colors of dried paint that had leaked past the upper packings. It may not seem like a big deal, but this will cause excessive wear and damage to your piston rod.
I had to remove the whole front drive assembly to clean all the paint out and re-lubricate everything before putting it back together with a spare fluid pump.
Maintenance is a choice, preventative maintenance through proper service and repair is much less expensive than servicing abused equipment. It's simple math.

Proper cleaning on your sprayer is so important. This 1040 came into my shop with complaints of the machine shutting off and not turning back on.
We removed the transducer to check it's condition and found all this paint buildup against the face of the transducer (pressure sensor). This caused a false pressure reading and shut the motor off. Consistent thorough cleaning could have easily prevented this.
