Voyager I and Voyager II were launched in 1977. More than 40 years later, both continue to function and have traveled outside our solar system and into interstellar space (over 13 billion miles from earth).

30 Years Ago: Voyager 2's Historic Neptune Flyby Humanity's first and (so far) last visit to the outermost giant planet in our solar system was a monumental event for scientists and the public alike.Read more

The Zamani Project documents cultural heritage worldwide with a focus on African sites. They use many different methods to gather digital spatial data of cultural heritage sites which can be used for research and education, for restoration and conservation and as a record for future generations. You can explore many of these digital sites on the Zamani Project website.

Many of these structures were Engineering Marvels in their time.

Four centuries before the Wright brothers flew their Wright Flyer down the slopes of Kitty Hawk, Leonardo Da Vinci wrote a document he called "Codex on the Flight of Birds." In this codex he explored the ideas of aerodynamics, light weight materials, the mechanics of flight, and the development of a flying machine. This work was truly ahead of it's time.

Is there a downside to airplanes being too reliable? Japan airlines discovered that with increased reliability, there is less opportunity for mechanics to receive training since the airplanes are in the air. Japan Airlines recently trialed a Virtual Reality training program for their pilots. The VR environment simulates an engine run-up scenario. JAL says this allows their mechanics to become familiar with the procedure while removing the need to have a plane physically in a hangar. Brilliant!

The airline is working to develop a training solution to improve mechanic proficiency without needing physical access to aircraft.

Developments in Aerospace Engineering impact many other areas. During this season of tropical storms, winds and rain are analyzed and models are created to predict the path and strength of the storm. These predictions are not perfect but they continue to improve. Advanced warnings based on this data saves lives. Much of this starts with imagery and data from satellites. For more information about how satellites are used in weather analysis and prediction you can visit the NASA blog. This page has detailed descriptions about satellite capabilities and how they were used to track, predict, and analyze Hurricane Dorian.
