Building Successfully Over Abandoned Underground Coal Mines:

Over the past 50 years BHATE Geosciences has provided abandoned coal mine subsidence mitigation for numerous significant projects.

Many of these projects are in the Jefferson, Shelby, Tuscaloosa, and Walker County areas of Alabama. BHATE has also provided consultation related to abandoned coal mines in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois. Many of these abandoned room and pillar coal mines operated from the 1900s to 1950s.

Building construction on ground underlain by abandoned room and pillar coal mines presents unique geotechnical challenges and risks due to the potential for ground subsidence, collapse, and variable differential ground movements.

Forensic Engineering is all about trying to find out what went wrong.

It involves the application of engineering principles and science in the investigation of failures. Vital to the field of forensic engineering is the process of investigating and collecting data related to design, materials, structures, or components that failed. This involves inspections, collecting evidence, measurements, developing failure models. Often, detailed testing and measurements are conducted to validate findings.

For 50 years BHATE’s staff has investigated and analyzed causes of failures related earthwork, embankments, excavations, retention structures, building foundations, and structural failures to develop remedial solutions on projects through the Southeast U.S.

Take a look at how Bhate can help with the forensic assessment of fire damaged concrete structures:

When reinforced concrete is exposed to fire, both the concrete and reinforcement may be altered, which can result in structural and material damage.

The repair strategy for fire-damaged structures depends on the severity of damage. While both can be characterized by laboratory testing of extracted samples (concrete cores and steel reinforcing), the scale of material sampling can often be very large, expensive and time consuming.

The longer and hotter the fire, the more severe the damage to the concrete.

Bhate can help by using non-destructive evaluation methods.

A Look Back: LSU Medical Center Teaching Hospital Project🏥

By providing expert guidance and leveraging our technical knowledge, BHATE can help the construction team achieve significant cost savings while ensuring a safe design that complies with the industry design guidelines and building codes.

Geotechnical Design: With thorough and competent geotechnical analyses, we can recommend the most suitable pile type based on soil conditions, load requirements, and project constraints. This avoids over-engineering and reduces material and installation costs.

Use of Technology and Innovation: By using the latest technology BHATE can assist the project to improve design accuracy and reduce construction costs.

Coordination with Other Disciplines: We work closely with the structural engineers and construction teams to develop specifications and bid documents to avoid conflicts or miscommunication that could lead to costly change orders.

Risk Mitigation and Problem Solving: By identifying and addressing potential risks early in the design stage, we can help avoid costly surprises during foundation installation.👷👷‍♀️
