There's a window in Montana, a couple weeks, maybe three if you're lucky, where fall's already here but the snow hasn't shown up to ruin the party yet. That window is closing. I know this because I just loaded the truck, and loading the truck is the only honest weather forecast I trust anymore.
Backseat looks like this: the CC Rider and the C-Ruck riding up top, because some gear earns a seat instead of a floorboard. The Flying Box Car and the Safari Beano PR 5.5 down on the floorboards, doing the unglamorous work of holding everything else without complaint. That's the fleet for this one. No roof rack, no trailer, no plan that requires cell service.
Here's the thing about driving around Montana this time of year. You stop pretending you need a destination. You need a direction and a reason not to come back too soon. Mine involves hot springs. I'm not telling you which ones. That's not me being difficult, that's me respecting the only rule that's kept Montana's good spots good: you find them, or you know somebody who'll take you there and swear you to silence first. If I hand you coordinates, I've ruined the thing I'm trying to protect. Go earn it.
Somewhere out there is an Instagram post with the exact pin dropped, probably geotagged and everything. You won't hear it from me. A man's got to keep a few things to himself.
What I will tell you is this: pack like the trip might get longer than planned, because out here it usually does. A detour down a Forest Service road because the color on that hillside looked better than the one on the map. A stop in a town you've never heard of because the diner had a line out the door at 7 a.m., which means the food's worth the wait. A hot spring that isn't marked on anything you can buy at a gas station.
None of that works if your gear can't take a beating. Gravel roads shake a bag apart if it's cheap. River mud finds every seam that isn't sealed right. And nobody wants to be the guy standing at a trailhead holding a strap that just separated from a bag that promised it wouldn't.
So load the truck. Check the gear old enough to have earned trust and new enough to still have some life left in it. Point the hood toward whatever direction feels less like home for a few days.
Snow's coming. It always does. But it's not here yet.
Halfway is nothing, especially on a trip you're making up as you go.
