Black Cloud Racing

Black Cloud Racing we build and repair dirt track racecars and restore old classics i have been around racing since a very young age. i knew my racing was over, i sold everything.

dad was running demos and built a car then started running winchester in 1972. i also started in demos at 16, started running enduros at 19, and then started in grocery getters(later called pure stocks) at 21. my 'reckless abandon' style wasn't very good for racking up wins in the demos, but i always came away with the 'people's choice' awards. i got my first win in pure stocks in aug 91 and got

my second win 2 weeks later. been a long dry spell since then, although i have been close a few times. i moved up to late models in 94 with dad's old rayburn/homebuilt chassis and got rookie of the year at winchester that year. we got a rocket chassis from tim hitt the following year and although ii ran good, i guess i never lived up to what the car was capable of. after a horrible 2000 season that included rolling the car on opening day at potomac, 2 concusions, and 9 broken bones, i returned to the street stocks late in 2000. i drove for longtime sponsor roland cox in a less-than-adequate car. back when winchester would have 15-20 cars in a consolation race(5 laps), we had alot of runs from the back to make the show, so i got the nickname "mr consi." after doing about the best i could with that old car, we built a new car the end of the 06 season. bad luck continued with that car and ended up only running the car 10 races in a year. although i led some laps in it, we never got the car dialed in to get some good finishes. in aug 07, i had a serious crash at winchester. those of you in racing know that once the racing'bug' has bitten you, it is hard to get away. i still continued to help a few buddies and go to the track every now and then. i started reworking an old car that donnie smith had and then the chance to drive for longtime friend jay fauver came up. we ran alot of of the 09 season and just about won a race at potomac(got together with anothercar with 2 to go and spun). we always had decent runs but the bad luck seemed to continue. i ran jay's car a few races in 2010 until i blew up his motor. late in 2010 we put my new motor in his car and even though the bad luck was still there, we had some promising results. in 2011 i will have my own car and hopefully run winchester for points. i have always considered our cars to be 'top 10' material even though the results don' t always show it. bad luck has always seems to follow me and my dad and my friends. it is as if there is a 'black cloud' over us most of the time, hence the Black Cloud Racing.

Saturday January 10 Potomac Speedway Banquet. Picked up our trophy for 4th in points and ended up with another award. 2025 Potomac Speedway Street Stock Sportsmanship Award and you better believe me when I say it was a surprise. I was truly humbled by it but it has a deeper meaning for me. My dad received 3 sportsmanship awards in the Hare division at Wi******er and in my early racing career I was in no danger of ever getting one. It is one I will always cherish.

Saturday November 1 Potomac Topless race. We finished 3rd in the heat race. I saw some sparks come out the hood and our oil leak made a comeback. We thought we found our oil leak and put a large amount of silicone on it. I was trying to help Deuce get another gear in his car for the feature so I was short on time for our car. Started 4th in the feature and inherited 2nd when Jonny Oliver pulled off with his car smoking. I almost spun but by the time I caught it Mason Hansen had nowhere to go and clipped me(my fault). Running in the back and not making much headway i got caught up in a wreck that I should have missed. It got the radiator, fan, shroud, nose piece and front bars. In tearing the car down a couple days later we found the ring came off the balancer and chewed through the timing cover. Was planning on one more race this season but all that damage halted that thought.

Saturday Sept 6 Wi******er In warmups the car ran really good for 3 laps and then the timing chain broke. It bent at least a couple valves, 1 pushrod, and destroyed the timing cover. There's a reason it's called Black Cloud Racing. Probably won't be back out til next season

Sun Aug 31 Potomac Started We had another major brake problem in the heat race and faded to finish 4th. Junior and multiple crews scrambled to get it back together. Started 7th, finished 5th. We're getting the handling dialed in just a little better. The car ran pretty good but after the race, it wouldn't idle at all. that's the second time that year it's happened. Next race for us will be Wi******er Sept 6

Sat Aug 23 Wi******er Started 4th in the heat but after the red bulldozer jumped 2 starts he was moved back a row and i started 2nd. I could feel a dead miss in the car as soon as we went green. Was running 3rd when I got pushed out of the way. The dozer took himself out while trying to crash into 2nd, so I ended up finishing 3rd. We found the miss was another broken rocker stud on a different cylinder than before. I appreciate everyone that checked to see if they had any studs and Gerald Shannon even offered me one off his vintage car that was sidelined after warmups. I decided just to start and park to at least get some tow money. We were credited with 12th in the first feature and 8th in the makeup feature. I also would like to thank Heather on the raceceiver. Both Pure Stock features had multiple starts before completing a lap. Rather than making me stay out and complete a lap, she let me know that taking a green was all I needed to do. Next Race for us will be our final point race at Potomac Sun Aug 31

Aug 16 Wi******er. We thought it was gonna be a good night when we drew a number 1 pill(2nd time this year). It was only for placement in 2 different groups for warmup time trials and then straight to the feature, timed 2nd in my group. Started 5th in the feature, got up to 4th but faded the rest of the race. I couldn't keep the car low, it just kept washing up the track. The last couple laps was getting oil on my shield. We ended up 8th and when I pulled in I found out the leaking oil was from my car. We had the intake off the car this past week and I didn't get it sealed good enough, oiled the whole car down pretty good.

(better late than never) Friday Aug 1 Potomac. It started sprinkling as we hit the track for our warmups so we got some extra laps getting it straightened back out. The car was popping while we were idling around but seemed to be ok once we went green. Started and finished 5th in the heat, seemed a little down on power. Started 9th in the feature, 2 cars dropped out with engine issues another 2 spun or got spun out. Car seemed down on power on restarts but felt ok racing. We finished 4th but while pulling to tech we heard a header leak(ended up being a header gasket). While changing the header gasket the next day we found a fouled plug on a different cylinder. Further inspection found a broken rocker stud and guide plate.

Fri July 25 Potomac With high temperatures forecasted we almost pulled the plug on heading to the track, I'm glad we didn't. Warmups were a little wet and since we haven't cured our brake problems, the car wouldn't turn so I just pulled in. Started 6th in the heat race and basically got a free pass to 3rd. Redraw put us starting 5th in the feature. Ran 4th the whole race and faded a little bit but had started making some ground up when the caution came out with 2 to go. The top 4 cars were pretty close at the end and We only missed 3rd place by a few feet. Special thanks to my substitute crew, my great nephew Decklan. The track crew made some more changes to the track this past week and it was really racy. In our feature you could run wherever you wanted top to bottom. Excited to make a few small changes to the car and head back to Potomac next Friday Aug 1. If we don't tear it up we'll be at Wi******er Sat Aug 2

Sat July 19 Wi******er. With heavy rain in the area it was a last minute decision to head to the track even though the racecar was already loaded. I timed 11th out of 12 cars, that put us starting 6th in the first heat. We got all the way up to 5th putting us 9th starting position for the feature. We gained a few positions in the opening laps even though the brakes were starting to fade. Around lap 4 or 5 the car just took off and climbed the frontstretch wall. With a flat tire I limped to the pits ready to call it a night but a bunch of friends came over and changed it for us. We went back out and finished the race but with some frontend damage and no rear brakes it was not really fun to drive. We finished 10th which paid $50 with a $50 bonus and a new tire from the Boone family(it was the Junior Boone Memorial race). Next race for us will be Fri July 25 at Potomac.

Thu July 3rd Potomac. Our track time was cut down to just time trial warmups and then straight to the feature. I didn't realize it was a blessing until I saw how rough the track was. On lap 2 of warmups the car bottomed out hard enough it broke the brand new right front shock(I hadn't even paid for it yet). We timed 12th out of 16 but later it was changed to 11th. We got the old spare back on the car and then added some heavier springs to the front. In the feature between putting the car where it shouldn't have been and the roughness of the track, it got tore up pretty good. Finally the car hit so bad it broke the bleeder screw off the left rear caliper and lost the brakes, finished 11th. Our next race is July 19 at Wi******er, the night of the Junior Boone Memorial. Not sure if we're going to return to Southern Maryland anytime soon.

Sat June 28 Wi******er. It started raining before warmups and took a while to get the track close to being ready. I got screwed out of running warmups because of helping with getting the track run in. Started 2nd in the heat race. Bj Jenkins took the lead but going into turn 3 his car cut off. We hit pretty hard door to door but both continued. We ended up 2nd. After extensive cleanup from a Late Model flip and more rain, the races were cancelled around 11 pm.

Fri June 20 Potomac. After our last race there, our goals were set a little higher. We were first car in the pits, drew pill number 1 but it kind of went downhill after that. With the help of JDR Motorsports we changed the rear suspension a little since our last time out. In the heat race started pole but I couldn't get the car to turn, we had all but the leader of the race stacked up behind us. After some contact and a death wobble down the back stretch we fell to last place. After some advice from Jonny Oliver we made a big change in the rear setup. We started 9th in the feature and the car still wouldn't turn, not even a little. We fell to 10th but the point leader dropped out and we ended up 9th. Getting the car loaded up we found the culprit, the quickpin came out of the RF shock. Repairs this week will include both RF shock mounts, a shock, and a radiator where I ran over a yuke tire with 2 laps to go. Next race for us will be Sat the 28th at Wi******er.
