STAR: Space Technologies and Rocketry

STAR: Space Technologies and Rocketry We are UC Berkeley’s competitive high-powered rocketry team. We engineer payloads, control systems UC Berkeley doesn’t have an official aerospace program.

The goal of Space Technologies and Rocketry is to create new and innovative technologies for use in high powered rockets and other space related vehicles, and enter associated competitions. We aim to fill that role by being a research hub and group where anyone passionate about aerospace can find a home. Among our many projects, we research propulsion, develop avionics and software, and, of course

, design, build, test, and fly high powered rockets out of spaceports in the Central Valley and the Mojave Desert. Another primary function of our club is hosting outreach events in the Berkeley community in order to engage children and adults in the fields of science, engineering, mathematics, and aeronautics. This year, we will be participating in ESRA’s Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition, where we will design, test, and build a high-powered rocket with a custom build motor capable of reaching an altitude of 10,000 feet. The ultimate goal of STAR is to be the first group to send an entirely university built rocket into space.

This weekend, STAR launched a rocket in collaboration with

With a payload of a bottle of Mach 1 Hot sauce, “Glamorous Glennis” flew to 10035 ft and reached a top speed of 1180 ft/s, or Mach 1.05. Mission Accomplished 🚀

Stay tuned for more video from the launch 👀

Space Technologies and Rocketry is UC Berkeley’s premier competition high-power rocketry team. Over the past 10 years, we have successfully completed 18 launches, with 5 taking place in the last year! With the successful launch of our first bi-propellant liquid vehicle ALULA, we are continuing development on our third liquid engine (Diablo). Our vehicles are entirely student-designed, manufactured, and tested, from our custom flight computer to our life support payload KELSE-Y. Committed to having no barriers to entry, STAR has no requirements or applications for members, and everyone who joins takes part in a comprehensive onboarding program. STAR also boasts the longest competition history on campus having previously launched at NASA Student Launch and ESRA Spaceport America Cup, and now participating in FAR-OUT.

STAR is continuing development on its second liquid rocket: LE3. A regeneratively cooled engine with pressure regulation, it’s our most ambitious project yet! We plan to launch Diablo’s solid motor demonstrator in Fall 2025 while developing the liquid rocket in parallel to be launched in Spring 2026. Funding will be divided between the two parallel projects’ development and insurance costs.

Our hundred-plus members work tirelessly to hone their engineering skills by launching rockets, but they cannot reach their full potential without proper funding. These projects additionally push the boundaries of collegiate rocketry and advance the field of low-cost rockets by inventing and testing new technologies. Using our accomplishments and the skills we learn, we lead outreach events with Bay Area pre-college students, inspiring them to pursue engineering.
