This is my 44 th year of running an environmental remediation business started out of the simple need of staying warm in winter.
I was employed as a 25 year old applications engineer for a Boston area electronic components company when the 1980 recession hit the tech industry. Six months after being laid off unemployment benefits ceased and my oil tank was empty. I owed my oil supplier from the previous delivery, and was cut off.

One night while leafing through the Want Ad Press I noticed the post “half full tank of oil for sale”. Back then the cost of oil was $.99 per gallon. I offered $50, bought 3 drums and rented a pump. The following week there was another ad “full tank of oil for sale”. Again I offered $50 and sold the oil to a friend. $200 profit for 3 hours or work!

So I ran my own “We buy oil” ad and my phone rang off the hook. By July of 1981 I had pumped 40,000 gallons of oil, delivering it to friends and neighbors from the back of my pickup truck.

Then came the inquiries; “what about the tank itself? Can you remove it? Back then few tanks were leaking, but my door was open for business in time for the 1983 enactment NJ ECRA regulations and promulgation of the 1988 Regulated Oil Tank regs.

Currently ANCO Environmental has removed over 20,000 petroleum tanks, and completed thousands of leaking fuel tank remediation projects. We employ a dedicated team of skilled operators, tradesmen and managers with an average ANCO employment tenure of 17 years. Our scope of services vary from Site Investigations to Emergency Spill Response.

I am a License Site Remediation Professional (LSRP). I appreciate those who have contributed their life energy to the meaningful service that ANCO provides. With gratitude I post this story, with tribute to the expression ‘necessity is the mother of invention’.
Those cold days of December 1980 instigated this story and a legacy.
