When a shop tells you that they recommend replacement of a (fill in the blank) they may be saying it for good reason. In this case a 50 dollar bearing failed and took off every tooth of the timing belt and caused over $3000 in engine repair. It can make a timing belt replacement more expensive, but look at the potential. I often tell my customers that this is pretty cheap insurance.
Also beware of shops that quote low to get you into their shop and fail to replace all that is needed or upscale after.
Note: so far as we know this belt was under the recommended mileage but way overdue on time.
