Behind every plan set, every milestone, every success at DOWL, there’s a with purpose.

We believe the best work starts with people who show up fully, driven by what inspires them both inside and outside the office. That’s why we’re excited to share a glimpse into the lives of four in our latest video—people who bring meaning to everything they do.

This week, meet:
Mike Towle, PE – Senior Project Manager
Monica Bradbury – Marketing Director
Irene Malto, PE, PMP – Transportation Engineer
Rich Pribyl, PE – Senior Water Resources Engineer

Earlier this month, DOWL sponsored a table at the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) Portland Scholarship & Awards Gala. This annual event brings people together to celebrate the future of transportation and recognize excellence across the industry. Several attended the event to network with other professionals in the transportation industry and engage with scholarship recipients about futures at DOWL.

During the gala, our own Courtney Davis was honored with this year's President’s Award, a top secret award that you cannot apply or be nominated for, as it is personally selected by the WTS President. Courtney was recognized for her outstanding service as a board member, highlighting her excellent leadership and successful coordination of the WTS monthly speaker series.

If you know Courtney, you know this award is well deserved! We are so happy to have her on our team. Please join us in congratulating her.

At DOWL, we’re proud to support the next generation of engineers through hands-on, real-world experience.

For the past seven years, DOWL has partnered with Gonzaga University’s senior design program, providing mentorship to student teams as they step into the role of a consulting firm. Faculty and industry professionals propose the projects; students select which ones are of most interest to them and then develop the projects in collaboration with their advisor. Students are responsible for writing a scope and fee, and spend the academic year working through challenges, presenting progress, and delivering final recommendations to real clients. Along the way, they gain hands-on experience in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving that’s hard to replicate in a classroom alone.

This year’s project tackled a complex and timely transportation question: When and why should an arterial lane be reduced? Under the mentorship of DOWL’s Adam Miles, the students researched national best practices, tested their findings, and developed a decision-making framework to help guide future conversations around a frequently debated issue. They also had the opportunity to present their work directly to agency staff at the Municipality of Anchorage and Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

Experiences like this help bridge the gap between education and practice and give students a clearer understanding of what their chosen profession will look like after graduation.

Being part of this program has also helped us meet some awesome Zags who we happily recruited to become . Either way you slice it, it’s a win win!

Future engineer in the making!

DOWLie Read Stapleton traded project deadlines for glue sticks and late nights, teaming up with his wife and stepson Oliver to complete Oliver’s third-grade bridge project. The assignment? Build a scaled replica of a real bridge.

By total coincidence (or maybe fate), Oliver chose the Oregon City Arch Bridge, one DOWL helped rehabilitate.

Once Read made the connection, Oliver got an extra-special assist: a chat with DOWL’s Jared Trowbridge, who worked on inspections for the bridge. Jared shared insights, stories, and even original 1921 plans, which Oliver used as part of platform for his model.
The result? An impressive bridge model and a third grader with a wealth of knowledge.

Read said, "Although the project was a beast to complete, I’m relieved Oliver didn’t choose a lift span bridge like some of the other kids! I’m already putting in a good word for him to join our intern class of 2037."

We love seeing curiosity, creativity, and a little DOWL connection come together like this. Great work, Oliver!

Today, we're celebrating the incredible moms who inspire, support, and uplift us every day. Megan Zollars, PE, Aviation Project Engineer, shares her beautiful tribute to her hero who also happens to be her mom:

"My mom has always been my biggest supporter, from cheering me on throughout high school sports to indulging my ramblings when I call her on the way home from work. She’s the one who encouraged me to go into civil engineering; I think her exact words were ‘I think the way highways and roads connect places is so interesting, you should study it!’ She’s always there to celebrate wins, listen and ask questions as I get too far into the details on projects, and provide positive perspective when I’m having a rough day."

Moms shape our lives in ways big and small encouraging us to dream, cheering us on, and offering wisdom when we need it most.

Who is your hero and why? 💖

Our Helena office knows how to have a good time.

What started as a simple “Hawaiian Shirt Friday” idea quickly turned into a full-on prank war—complete with a perfectly executed double cross and some unexpected coordination, including matching shirt patterns. Safe to say, things escalated in the best way possible.

showed up in custom Hawaiian shirts… featuring the faces of fellow DOWLies. Yes, real faces. On shirts.

Consider this a friendly warning, Helena: you never know who will be featured next.
