Here are Tom Moreland DMG Tool & Die owner and Chief Engineer and myself accepting the DRMA "Rookie of the Year" award at United Grinding May 6, Tom has a passion to educate and bring up the next generation of manufacturing. This award is in recognition of Tom's & DMG's efforts to host students for "Manufacturing Day" at our facility.
Please read this note from Tom regarding "Tips for a successful student tour".
"If you are struggling to find entry-level employees for your manufacturing jobs, hosting student tours is an excellent way to move from a “wish-list” to a “wait-list” of prospective new-hires. In collaboration with the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and the Midwest Regional ESC, DMG has successfully conducted Manufacturing Day tours for junior and seniors from the county high schools and the Hi-Point Career Center. This has created a pipeline of students starting as high school interns and progressing to full-time manufacturing specialists in fabrication and machining.
Here's a few tips for hosting an engaging student tour:
Show enthusiasm! If you want students to consider your company for a future career, showing excitement and enjoyment in your work is essential.
Show them what you do, instead of just talking at them. Better yet, give them a chance to get their hands dirty. Could they make some kind of branded souvenir during their visit?
If you have any younger workers, make them a prominent part of the visit. Let them show off what they do and share why they chose to work for you.
Be sure whoever is speaking or leading knows the following facts:
How does your company support ongoing education and training? Do you pay for schooling or credentials? Students want clear opportunities to grow and learn.
How do the products you produce make a difference? Students want to be part of something bigger and not just a cog in the machine.
How many of your employees are under the age of 30? Students want to join a team including coworkers close to their age.
Let them know they are wanted and needed in [Your City/Region]. Personally invite and encourage them to stick around after they graduate high school or come back after college or military service.
I am an eager spokesman for the love of “making stuff” to the next generation or anyone else! If you would like to talk more about DMG’s experience recruiting, hiring, and training young people, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Thomas Moreland
