🌀 HURRICANE ISA… ISAIA… ISAIAS! 🌀

Well, y'all, there's a hurricane making landfall overnight, and apparently nobody told Mother Nature that around here, we prefer names we can actually pronounce! 😂

For those of us still trying to sound it out, it's Isaias (ees-ah-EE-ahs). But quite frankly, we don't care WHAT your name is… YOU AIN'T WELCOME! 🚫🌀

Now, the good news is that here in our neck of the woods, we're not forecasted to get the worst of this storm. And we sure hope that forecast holds! 🤞

We pride ourselves on Southern hospitality here in God's Country, but when it comes to hurricanes, we'd prefer ALL of them to be fish storms — out in the ocean, minding their own business!

As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days.” Well, Ben, when it comes to hurricanes, they stink before they even get here, and we don't want them staying for ANY length of time! 😂

So, Isaias, don't take it personally. We don't want your cousins visiting either!

🏠 Gilchrist Building Supply is OPEN until 5:30 PM today, and we plan to be back at 8:00 AM tomorrow for those last-minute storm supplies!

We've got generators, flashlights, batteries, tarps, and plenty of other supplies to help you stay prepared. Because even when you're not on the guest list, Mother Nature has been known to show up unannounced!

❤️ All joking aside, please keep an eye on weather updates, make your preparations, and stay safe. We're hoping for an uneventful night here at home, and we're keeping those in the storm's path in our thoughts and prayers.

🌀 Well, hello there, Hurricane Season. We were hoping you’d forgotten about us.

There’s a tropical storm churning around in the Gulf of America and forecast to become a hurricane by the weekend. Right now, we’re NOT in the cone of uncertainty — and we’d be perfectly happy to keep it that way.

But hurricanes are a little like toddlers with a Sharpie.
Just because you know where they are right now doesn’t mean you know where they’re headed next. 😳

So consider this your friendly reminder to check your hurricane supplies before everybody suddenly remembers they need the exact same things.

⚡ GENERATORS — YES, WE HAVE THEM IN STOCK!
🔦 Flashlights & batteries
🪚 Lumber & building supplies
❄️ Window & portable A/C units
🌀 Fans
🔌 Extension cords & electrical supplies

Already have a generator? Go start it. Seriously. Finding out it won't crank is much less exciting today than it will be at 11 PM with no power, 87% humidity and everybody in the house suddenly becoming an expert on small-engine repair. 😂

No need to panic. Just pay attention to the updates, prepare early and remember that storms have a mind of their own.

Hopefully this one stays far away from us and eventually becomes nothing more than a weather map we spent entirely too much time staring at. 🤞🌀

🍂 IT’S FALL, Y’ALL! 🍂

Well… according to the calendar.

North Florida is still working through some feelings about it. 😂

But the good news is, we're getting closer to that magical time of year when you can tackle an outdoor project without losing half your body weight in sweat.

So what’s on the list?

🔨 That deck that’s been “gonna get fixed” since approximately 2022.

🏡 That fence with the one board everybody has been pretending not to notice.

🌱 That yard that survived another Florida summer and deserves either fertilizer, mulch, or possibly an apology.

🌿 Those weeds that are already making plans for next year. Now’s a good time to ruin those plans.

🪚 That outdoor project you’ve been putting off because “it’s too hot” is slowly running out of excuses.

And because we live in Florida, hurricane season is still hanging around like the guest who doesn't realize the party is over—so it’s not a bad idea to check the generator, flashlights, extension cords and other storm supplies while you’re at it.

Only in Gilchrist County…

The calendar says it’s Autumn. 🍂

Up north, that means brilliant red and orange leaves, crisp mornings and sweaters.

Here in Gilchrist County?

We might get seven leaves to change color.

Not seven trees.

Seven leaves. 😂

But we have our own signs that fall is creeping into North Central Florida.

The yellow butterflies are everywhere. 🦋
The ragweed is blooming — your sinuses may have already sent you the official announcement. 🤧
The mornings are starting to feel a little better.
And hopefully — hopefully — the temperatures are beginning their slow retreat from surface-of-the-sun to merely Florida warm.

Of course, we know better than to put the shorts away.

Around here, fall doesn't exactly arrive.

It makes a few brief appearances until sometime around Thanksgiving when we finally decide it might be serious. 😄

And when we get a morning cool enough to need a light jacket?

Don't worry.

You'll be carrying it by 10:30. 😂

🪰 LOVEBUG SEASON: A romantic name for Florida’s most obnoxious flying hood ornaments.

We’re over it.

They’re on the windshield.
They’re on the bumper.
They’re in the grille.
They’re in your hair.
They’re flying into your mouth.

And they have the AUDACITY to be called lovebugs.

Love?
No.

This is harassment. 😑

For most of the year, we coexist peacefully with Florida wildlife. Deer? Fine. Gopher tortoises? Love ’em. Butterflies? Welcome.

Lovebugs?

Your invitation has been revoked.

Thankfully, their big seasons are May and September, and September is almost OVER. 🙌

Until these flying little homewreckers finally pack it up, remember to wash their remains off your vehicle. Leaving bug guts baked onto the finish is not the souvenir you want from September.

It’s bow-hunting season. 🦌🏹

That magical time of year when you climb into a tree stand before daylight, settle in quietly and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature…

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. 🦟

Yep. Mosquitoes.

And apparently every gnat in North Florida got the memo about where you’d be sitting.

But every now and then, September throws us a bone.

You walk outside before daylight and think…

“WAIT. Is that… cool air?”

Nobody move.
Nobody say anything.
And for goodness’ sake, don’t mention it on Facebook or you’ll scare it off. 😂

Because we know how this works.

Enjoy those glorious few degrees while you can.

By the time you climb down from the stand, summer may have found us again. ☀️

Meanwhile, tree stands are going up.
Camo is coming out.
Alarm clocks are being set for hours that shouldn't legally be considered morning.

And grown adults who complain about getting up for work at 6:00 AM will voluntarily be sitting in a tree in the dark long before that. 😂

Of course, somebody will discover at the last minute that they need a flashlight, batteries, rope, gloves, bug spray or one of the other 14 things they were sure they already had.

That’s where Gilchrist Building Supply comes in.

We may not be able to make the buck walk underneath your stand…

Only in Gilchrist County…
(And before our county neighbors chime in… yes, we know. Y’all too. 😏)

Some roads have speed bumps.

Ours have naturally occurring traffic-calming devices. 😏

After a good rain, that dirt or limerock road you drove yesterday may have developed a few new features overnight:

A pothole you could assign a ZIP code.
Washboards capable of rearranging your internal organs.
And that one deceptively innocent-looking puddle that makes you wonder…

“Do I go around it, through it, or should I have brought a boat?” 😂

Then there’s the local driving technique — weaving from one side of the road to the other trying to find the smooth spots.

To an outsider, it may look like something’s wrong with you.

To the person coming the other way?

They understand completely. They’re doing it too.

Around here, we don't always need a sign that says ROUGH ROAD.

We just need you to pay attention to the person in front of you. If they suddenly disappear, take the next pothole a little slower. 😄
