U.S. consumers pulled back in July, with retail sales posting their biggest monthly decline in more than a year.
Sales fell 0.6% from June to $763.6 billion, compared with expectations for a slight increase. Auto and parts sales dropped 1.8%, while online sales fell 2.2%.
Excluding auto dealers and gasoline stations, sales were down a more modest 0.2% for the month.
Despite July’s slowdown, total retail sales were still 5% higher than a year ago.
