Let’s break down depreciation and expensing simply. In the past, if you bought a big thermoforming system or a new trim press, you had to spread out the tax deduction over several years. You would eventually get the full federal deduction, but the first year didn’t help much with your taxable income or cash flow. Now, many manufacturers can deduct a large part of the cost of qualifying machinery in the first year it’s put to use, as long as they follow the rules.
