When the owner of the Bayonne Drydock & Repair Corp. (BDDRC) made the decision to purchase the worlds largest travel lift to have the ability to lift ships with overall lengths of 200 feet out of the water and carry them onto land, Rioux Engineering LLC (RE) was hired as the exclusive engineer to prepare the designs for the bulkheads, piers, upland improvements and dredging. Additionally, RE has provided all of the contract bidding and negotiation services and continues to provide contract administration and resident engineer services.
The Cimolai MBH 1280 is capable of lifting a 1,280 Metric Ton vessel (1,410 US Tons) out of the water and walking it onto land. With its 32 wheels, at maximum capacity the machine imparts 71,000 # of force under each wheel (11,300 pounds per square foot) to the pavement system.
The MBH 1280 will be utilized by the BDDRC in support of their work for the maintenance and repair of US Naval Vessels, US Coat Guard Vessels and commercial vessels. By adding the ability to lift 200 foot long vessels out of the water and placing them onto land for maintenance and repairs, the work will be more cost effective and the BDDRC’s increased work capabilities will provide added regional economic benefits through employment and materials and services purchases.
