A little bit about our owner:
Hugo Marrero was born and raised in Cuba. In 1956 he came to the United States to attend LSU, graduating in electrical engineering. He returned to Cuba and worked as an electrical engineer. Shortly thereafter the communist government took over the facility where he was working. Mr. Marrero refused to work for the communist government and tendered his resignation, which was not accepted. In 1962, fearing for his safety, he and his wife Oria escaped from Cuba with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and $80 hidden in the soles of his shoes. Mr. Marrero is an American success story. His belief in personal freedom, opportunity, and commitment to providing a quality professional service led him to refuse to work for a communist dictatorship. Those same beliefs have guided his professional life in Louisiana.
Mr. Marrero began his career in Louisiana working for Forte and Tablada. Six years later in 1968 he opened his own company, still in business 46 years later. Marrero, Couvillon & Associates currently has offices in Baton Rouge and Metairie. Over the past 46 years Mr. Marrero has employed hundreds of people, mentoring many engineers in their early development. If engineering was not Mr. Marrero’s profession, it likely would be his hobby; indeed, it may well be his hobby as well as his profession! He loves what he does.
Mr. Marrero is past president of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies. He has served on the Energy Committee of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce. He is a founder of the High School for the Engineering Profession, a magnet program of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and of the Louisiana Engineering Society and has served on various committees of these organization. But, as noted above, his real contributions to the practice of engineering in Louisiana is best reflected in those that have learned from him. His passion for engineering and commitment to quality now resides in those fortunate enough to have worked with him over the years.
