🐝 Robbing!
🍯 This time of year, as resources become less available, robbing is a greater concern for hives. Robbing happens when foragers from another hive enter a weaker hive to take resources.
In this photo, you can see the difference between comb that hasn’t been robbed, and comb that has been robbed. Notice the jagged edges on the robbed comb! Robber bees have chewed the wax cappings and taken the honey back to their own hives.
💰Some signs your hives are experiencing robbing pressures:
•Fighting at the entrance
•Debris at entrance (may be wax cappings)
•Bees looking to sneak in at a hidden entrance (seams, back of hive, cracks)
🔒Some things you can do if you notice robbing:
•Reduce the entrance
•Ensure you don’t spill honey or syrup in your bee yard, and if you do, clean up immediately
•Use a robbing screen (available in our store and at happbeeacres.com)
