Solar Oysters

Solar Oysters SOPS is a revolutionary approach to grow a high volume of oysters on a small footprint compared to traditional oyster aquaculture.

Solar Oysters is an innovative aquaculture technology company using sustainable energy to automate and maximize oyster production while minimizing labor inputs. Solar Oysters LLC is an innovative aquaculture technology company using sustainable energy to automate and maximize oyster production while minimizing labor inputs. Solar Oysters offers a new production platform, the Solar Oysters Producti

on System (SOPS) that uses solar energy to vertically rotate oysters through the water column. This technology can generate nutrient credits as well as a sustainable food source, all powered by solar energy. In February 2024, Solar Oysters entered a partnership with Hooper’s Island Oyster Company (HIOC), making them the distributor of SOPS in North America. In addition, the SOPS prototype will be deployed on HIOC’s lease in 2024 to further refine and improve the technology. We anticipate SOPS will be commercially available for purchase by 2025. Before the partnership with HIOC, Solar Oysters partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance to test our SOPS technology by growing almost 400,000 oysters for the Foundation’s Baltimore Harbor Oyster Gardening Program. Solar Oysters was able to increase the numbers of oysters grown for restoration in the Baltimore Harbor by more than 60% over two years. Solar Oysters has attracted broad media attention in outlets such as The Fish Site, Seafood Source, Aquaculture Magazine, Aquaculture North America and the Global Seafood Alliance, among others. The experienced team that makes up Solar Oysters, LLC, welcomes inquiries from interested parties. For more information, visit www.solaroysters.com or contact us at [email protected].

Attention! Bid Date Extended – SOPS 2.0

To ensure a competitive and fair bidding process for the SOPS 2.0 prototype, Solar Oysters has extended the bid submission deadline to January 15, 2026.

This extension is intended to support bidders who felt the original timeline was insufficient and to encourage additional qualified bidders to participate.

Interested parties are to contact Neil Armstrong with Misty Bay Design Works for the bid and tender instruction package. Neil can be contacted at [email protected] and 1-416-576-3346.

Solar Oysters is seeking a qualified manufacturer to fabricate a prototype oyster farming module as part of our next-generation aquaculture platform. This new module, referred to as SOPS 2.0, builds on the proven performance of the existing Solar Oysters Production System (SOPS)—a patent-pending, solar-powered, automated platform designed to sustainably grow oysters at commercial scale.

The current SOPS prototype has successfully operated through an entire oyster growth cycle. Based on lessons learned, the SOPS 2.0 module has been engineered as an add-on unit that connects to the existing platform.

The SOPS platform features a floating aluminum structure that supports a ladder-chain arrangement of submerged baskets, which automatically rotate oysters through the water column to enhance growth and minimize fouling. The SOPS 2.0 module will retain this core functionality with design improvements and enhanced scalability.

To support overland transportation and ease of assembly, the new module is designed with bolted aluminum connections and sized for shipment via standard, road-legal trailers.

This week, our own Erin O’Toole, Steve Pattison, and Ed Mihalski attended the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance’s (COA) Partner Meeting at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Philip Merrill Center. Attendees received updates on the status of the revised Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, federal funding to support oyster restoration, seafood marketing and participated in discussions to “re-imagine” COA. The meeting concluded with a cruise on CBF's Marguerite. We are so thankful to COA for hosting events like this to reconnect with the partners and discuss success stories throughout the year!

Yesterday Solar Oysters’ Steve Pattison and Erin O’Toole attended the 2024 Chesapeake Oyster Science Symposium in Virginia Beach. We had a great time learning about the latest industry studies and practices while connecting with the over 50 in-person attendees. Steve was given the chance to speak about our Solar Oysters Production System (SOPS), highlighting SOPS’ benefits and operation as well as past and future activities.

While at the Symposium, we met up with Jordan Shockley of Hoopers Island Oysters Company, the North American distributor of SOPS, who also presented about their parent company, Blue Oyster Environmental.

We thank Tanner Council and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation for inviting Solar Oysters to this amazing conference.
