🔁 Back by Popular Demand

After strong feedback from last year’s attendees, Luis Ortiz returns to the Bakersfield ASSP Professional Development Symposium with a session that challenges how we think about safety ownership.

From Heroes to Systems: Transitioning From Individual Safety Ownership to the ANSI/ASSP Z10.0 Safety Management System Standard

For too long, organizations have relied on “safety heroes” — the vigilant employee or the passionate safety professional — to carry safety performance.

But sustainable results require something stronger: a system.

In this practical session, Luis will share how to:

✔ Move from personality-driven safety to a structured management system
✔ Use ANSI/ASSP Z10.0 to embed safety into daily operations
✔ Engage leadership and employees in shared accountability
✔ Build a culture of continuous improvement

With over 20 years of experience and as a Lead Instructor at the OSHA Training Education Center at CSUDH, Luis brings real-world perspective and practical application to every session.

If you’re working to strengthen your organization’s safety management system — this is one you won’t want to miss.

📅 Three weeks to go.

Arc Flash Hazard: OSHA Guidance & NFPA 70E Emphasis on Maintenance Impacts PPE Selection

OSHA’s recent arc flash guidance clarifies critical questions around low voltage work and appropriate PPE. And the latest NFPA 70E (2024) places new emphasis on equipment maintenance and its direct impact on incident energy labeling and PPE selection.

In this technical deep dive, Scott Francis, a safety industry expert with over three decades of experience in protective apparel and thermal hazard standards, will break down:

✔ OSHA guidance for low voltage and de-energizing work
✔ How maintenance condition affects incident energy and PPE category accuracy
✔ NFPA 70E’s emphasis on risk assessment and human performance
✔ Why comfort = protection when it comes to arc-rated PPE

If you oversee electrical safety, arc flash programs, or PPE selection within your organization, this session delivers practical insight you can apply immediately.

📅 Four weeks to go.

🎤 Keynote Speaker Announcement

Is all winning success?

We’re excited to welcome Miss Val as the Keynote Speaker for the Bakersfield ASSP Professional Development Symposium.

In her keynote, “Is All Winning Success?”, Miss Val challenges leaders to rethink how they define performance, culture, and impact.

She’ll explore:
✔ The difference between winning and true success
✔ Whether success is possible without “winning”
✔ How your personal leadership philosophy shapes your results

A former professional ballet dancer turned legendary UCLA Gymnastics Head Coach, Miss Val led her teams to 7 NCAA Championships and mentored Olympic champions including Simone Biles and Jordyn Wieber.

Her philosophy — “Life is Short, Don’t Wait to Dance” — has inspired leaders at NASA, JP Morgan, General Electric, Chick-fil-A, and many more.

For safety professionals, HR leaders, healthcare administrators, and public service professionals, this session will challenge how we think about performance, accountability, and culture within our own organizations.

A special thank you to A-C Electric Company, our Keynote Sponsor, for supporting leadership development and strengthening safety culture in our region.
