A consistently hot-running engine can cause major problems ranging from cracked head caskets to warped cylinders. These costly repairs can be prevented by using these tips:

1. Inspect Hoses
Hoses connect the various parts of your engine’s cooling system, allowing coolant to travel throughout the system to keep the engine cool. Even tiny leaks can have a major effect on your engine’s temperature.
2. Look at the Radiator
The radiator is a vital part of your engine’s cooling system. It essentially lowers the temperature of the coolant fluid that in turn cools the engine. When the radiator is leaking or clogged, it can cause the engine to overheat.
3. Check Water Pump
A failing water pump can have a detrimental effect on your engine’s ability to stay cool. When it isn’t functioning the way it should, it can’t help the coolant flow through the engine block.
4. Keep Up With Maintenance
Overheating is usually the result of poor maintenance. Routine inspections are the best way to ensure long engine life. Insufficient oil and coolant can cause your engine to run hot, but these can be easily addressed by a maintenance professional.
