Few vehicles carry the charm and cultural weight of the Volkswagen Bus. But the 1973 Brazilian 23-window version? That’s something truly special. Long after production ceased in Europe, Brazil continued building these iconic vans, giving modern enthusiasts a rare chance to experience vintage style with a slightly newer twist. At our shop, we saw this beautifully restored import as the perfect canvas to fuse classic soul with clean, modern EV power.

The Volkswagen Brazilian Bus, often referred to as the Kombi, became an enduring symbol of practicality and creativity. Produced in Brazil from 1957 to 2013, this beloved vehicle outlasted its European counterparts by decades. Its versatility made it a staple for families, small businesses, and adventurers worldwide. Today, these buses evoke nostalgia and represent a bridge between generations of automotive enthusiasts.

This particular bus arrived from Brazil in excellent shape, its interior already lovingly restored. From the polished trim to the original seating layout, it had the kind of character that turns heads wherever it rolls. Our goal was clear: preserve the aesthetic and spirit of the vehicle while delivering a safe, reliable, and downright fun electric driving experience.

And we do mean fun. With its new EV powertrain, this bus has way more pep than the original. Zipping up to freeway speeds is effortless when it’s on a full charge—an experience that catches more than a few passengers by surprise. It’s a transformation that stays true to the Kombi’s legacy while making it ready for modern roads.

The foundation of this conversion is a 37.8kWh battery pack, made up of six Tesla Model S modules arranged in series. Managed by an Orion BMS 2, the system ensures optimal voltage, temperature control, and built-in safety features. This setup gives the bus more than 75 miles of real-world range on a single charge—perfect for short weekend adventures, coffee runs, or just soaking up the attention this classic draws wherever it goes.

At the heart of the drivetrain is a NetGain HyPer9 HV AC motor, paired with a liquid-cooled HyPer-Drive™ X144 controller. Together, they deliver a smooth, responsive ride with 90kW of peak power and enough torque to make even steep hills feel easy.

What sets this build apart isn’t just the performance, it’s the careful attention to detail. We’ve tucked the NACS (North American Charging Standard) charge port neatly behind the original fuel door, preserving the bus’s clean exterior lines. On the dashboard, a digital fuel gauge now reflects battery charge status, replacing the old analog needle while maintaining the classic layout. An electronic shifter, nestled into the center console, provides an intuitive way to drive without altering the vintage aesthetic.

Every component was installed with minimal intrusion, thanks to careful 3D scanning and packaging that allowed all major systems to fit within the original engine bay. That means the cabin remains exactly as it should—open, functional, and iconic.

There’s something magical about merging past and present in a vehicle like this. It’s not just about clean energy or tech—it’s about preserving stories, style, and experiences. This 1973 Brazilian Bus carries all the personality of its combustion-era counterpart but replaces the leaks, hard starts, and noisy climbs with silence, simplicity, and surprise off-the-line acceleration.

As we see it, conversions like this don’t just restore—they elevate. And for this bus, the road ahead is electric, emission-free, and every bit as iconic.

Few cars hold the legendary status of the Jaguar E-Type. When it first hit the roads in 1961, Enzo Ferrari famously called it “the most beautiful car ever made.” The E-Type combined sleek lines, groundbreaking performance, and luxury in a way that defined an era. While its timeless design has remained a symbol of elegance, the original powertrain and mechanical systems have aged, often requiring significant upkeep and lacking the reliability or environmental consciousness of modern vehicles.

At our shop, we’ve been fortunate to work on some remarkable conversions, but the 1973 Jaguar E-Type might be one of our proudest accomplishments yet. The goal? Seamlessly marry the soul of this iconic vehicle with cutting-edge EV technology. We wanted to preserve its essence while bringing it into the 21st century as a reliable EV daily driver.

Our E-Type conversion began with a powerhouse upgrade: a 72.8kWh Tesla Model S battery pack. The vehicle delivers over 200 miles of real-world range at highway speeds. This impressive range is powered by a Stealth Drive motor rated at 375kW (500hp) and 365 lb-ft of torque. The new electric Jaguar maintains its character while offering smooth electric acceleration.

Preserving the Jaguar’s spirit meant more than just selecting the right components. It meant ensuring the original aesthetic and driving experience remained intact. The shifter feels as it always did, seamlessly integrated with the new powertrain. Even the heater controls retain their original function, now triggering a modern heating system powered by the traction battery.

Beyond performance, this conversion has transformed the E-Type into a reliable daily driver—something the original, with its temperamental engine and maintenance quirks, never quite achieved. The owner now enjoys the freedom to take it out whenever they please, without the worry of oil leaks, hard starts, or unexpected breakdowns. This is an E-Type that not only turns heads but does so with effortless reliability.

One of the Jaguar's more unique features is a display discreetly hidden in the glovebox. This advanced control panel offers diagnostics, drive mode selection (eco, normal, sport), and real-time data like cell voltages during charging. The decision to hide it was driven by the customer’s desire to maintain the car’s classic look while enjoying modern conveniences—a testament to how this project respects the past while embracing the future.

Working on a car like the E-Type presented unique challenges. Replacement parts were often either unavailable or of subpar quality, requiring us to source or fabricate components that met our high standards. From trim to radiators, we ensured every piece was as durable and refined as the car deserved.

Another technical triumph was programming a fully custom Vehicle Control Unit (VCU). This system governs all the car’s functions with an emphasis on safety and reliability, incorporating OEM-level failsafe features to ensure peace of mind.

Cooling systems also posed a unique challenge. To maintain the E-Type’s silhouette, we designed a custom radiator that houses two thermally separate systems—one for the battery and onboard chargers and another for the motor and inverter. Speed-controlled fans ensure efficient cooling while keeping noise to a minimum.

The result is a car that stays true to the Jaguar E-Type’s legacy while offering the sustainability and performance of a modern EV. With its elegant lines, thoughtful engineering, and thrilling powertrain, this electrified E-Type is ready to inspire a new generation of admiration on the open road.

At our shop, we see projects like this as more than just technical challenges—they’re opportunities to keep automotive history alive in a way that’s relevant for today and tomorrow. This Jaguar E-Type, with its blend of timeless beauty and innovative technology, stands as a shining example of what’s possible.

Stay tuned for more exciting projects as we continue redefining classic cars for a sustainable future!

At EV Works, we recently wrapped up a unique and challenging project: reviving a Corbin Sparrow. This quirky, single-passenger electric vehicle arrived at our shop with a significant issue—its motor was blown, and the brushes had completely melted. The car had also undergone some previous modifications, including a battery upgrade to Nissan Leaf cells. With these factors in play, our team knew this was going to be no ordinary project.

For those unfamiliar, the Corbin Sparrow is a true oddity in the automotive world. Originally designed and produced by Corbin Motors in the late 1990s, the Sparrow was aimed at urban commuters looking for a small, efficient, and electric-powered way to get around. Its most distinctive feature is its three-wheel design and narrow, egg-like shape, making it ideal for navigating tight city streets. Production was limited, and Corbin Motors ceased operations in the early 2000s, leaving only a few hundred Sparrows on the road. Over the years, the vehicle has developed a enthusiastic following among EV fans and collectors.

Working on a vehicle as rare as the Corbin Sparrow presents its own set of challenges. Sourcing a replacement motor wasn’t straightforward, as the original parts are no longer manufactured. We had to sleuth out a compatible option and make the necessary adjustments to fit it into the Sparrow's unique layout. Additionally, the previous modifications added another layer of complexity, requiring us to work around the non-original Nissan Leaf cells and configure the system for optimal performance.

Our team’s experience with obscure and classic EV projects played a crucial role in getting this little car back on the road. After acquiring the right motor and addressing the root cause of the failure, we were able to breathe new life into the Sparrow.

This project wasn’t just about repairing a broken vehicle; it was about preserving a piece of electric vehicle history. The Corbin Sparrow stands as a reminder of the early days of EV development and the creative solutions that pioneers brought to the table. Now, this particular Sparrow is ready to continue its journey as a piece of living history, with a modern twist.

Driving the Corbin Sparrow is an experience like no other. Its lightweight design and nimble handling make it incredibly fun to zip around town, with quick acceleration and responsive braking that inspire confidence. And let’s not forget the reactions it gets—this quirky EV is a certified head-turner, drawing smiles, waves, and curiosity wherever it goes. The Sparrow isn’t just a mode of transportation; it’s a conversation starter and a celebration of electric innovation. Taking it for a spin reminds us why we love working on vehicles that are as unique as their owners.

At EV Works, we thrive on tackling unique projects and delivering out-of-the-box solutions. One of our standout projects involved upgrading a shop forklift from outdated lead-acid batteries to a lithium chemistry, using upcycled cells from a Nissan Leaf.

Why make the switch to lithium? Here are just a few reasons:

• Consistent Power: Lithium offers a more consistent power output, even as the battery charge depletes.
• Increased Efficiency: Lithium batteries offer faster charging times and longer lifespan, meaning less downtime and more productivity.
• Enhanced Performance: With consistent power output and better energy density, our forklift can handle heavy loads with ease.
• Lower Maintenance: With the forklifts built-in battery management system you can get full diagnostic data streamed directly to your phone, making maintenance and upkeep a breeze.

This project is not just an upgrade; it’s a testament to the power of upcycling. By refreshing the forklift with new performance capabilities and using recycled cells from a Nissan Leaf, we’re giving new life to both the equipment and the batteries, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

This is a perfect example of how we can upgrade and modernize your everyday equipment. Whether it’s a forklift, a classic car, or a custom vehicle, if you can dream it, we can make it happen.
