OSHA 1926.1433(d)(3)
Hook and ball assemblies and load blocks must be marked with their rated capacity and weight.

I had a customer tell me yesterday that none of his blocks had this information on them, I said well they all are non-compliant. My hands are tied this according to OSHA is a deficiency.
This is a SAFETY issue.

Let's talk about why...
-First off let's talk about the eighth word in this standard (MUST). This means it has to be on the block or ball no exceptions. Notice it doesn't say anything about a tag.. it says marked. So many people think they have to have a tag, it just says marked.
-Secondly let's discuss why this information is important... The working load limit or WLL. How much can the block or ball lift safely as per the manufacturer. If this information is not marked how would we know it? You might say let's just look in the operators manual, but the owner of the crane may not have purchased the block and (or) ball with the crane or they could have been switched.
The weight of the block or ball... this is needed because the weight is a deduction on every lift whether it's being used or not. If the correct weight is not known the crane could be overloaded and the potential for an accident is increased.
Let's keep everyone safe on every job site.

Come on now... We as operators are supposed to be professionals... this is not professional.
