Occasionally dead whales wash up on The Oregon coast and this is the latest example. Years ago the Oregon Department of Transportation tried to blow up a whale with dynamite to help it decompose faster. The results were terrible-blasting blubber and whale guts several hundred feet that made a mess and damaged cars.

The deceased fin whale in the photos is 46 feet long and located just North of Seaside Oregon at Sunset Beach. Fin whales feed on small fish like herring as well as krill. Baleen is the name of the game for these bad boys!

and both concluded the whale was dead, squishy and very slimy to the touch.

Looking at some old growth logs to mill into old growth lumber! Douglas Fir can come in a wide variety of shapes sizes and grades. We are trying to source clear vertical grain from these logs!

I spent the last few days on a road trip traveling from Portland Oregon to Las Vegas Nevada with . We drove through Winnemucca, Fallon, Tonopah and Beatty among other places. Nevada is rugged, desolate and beautiful. Mining, gambling and ranching-it’s truly the Wild West! The people are friendly with a great sense of humor. So much history and nature to explore yet so little time!

Most of the logs from urban tree removals ends up as mulch or firewood, even high quality saw logs that could be turned into beautiful wood products like furniture, flooring or even guitars!

Today at the conference in Saint Louis I partnered with .market and to educate arborists on how to send the good logs to mills for the highest and best use.

Lots of black walnut short boards, vertical grain Doug fir, Oregon white oak, big leaf maple, paulownia and more! Kiln dried, planed both sides. So many amazing things to be made from furniture to flooring, cutting boards and welp really anything!

Six foot diameter giant sequoia (interior California redwood species) came in today. We will break down the logs with a chainsaw and then mill them into beam benches for a new apartment building complex. Normally these logs are sent to pulp mills so it’s a great opportunity to put the wood to good use!

Hey everyone! I’ve decided to change up my IG account, formally known as Epilogue LLC which is my sawmill business. Don’t worry, I’m still cranking out lumber 365 days a year. Mostly VG fir, black walnut, white oak and other specialty wood products. NO SLABS, JUST BOARDS!!! The wood I produce comes mostly from urban trees around Portland and non timber forestland. It can be used for furniture, flooring, cutting boards, doors/windows, guitars and even a lowly pallet or two.

I’m still working on my book, . Yes I’m way behind schedule but making significant progress! Wood from the City is about urban lumber and urban forestry.

I’ve been playing harmonica since college and more recently a lot of electric guitar. I’m excited to share my love of music with everyone!

Since I can remember, I was the class clown, the goofy guy looking for humor in pretty much everything. It’s been an obsession for sure. Over the last several months I’ve been working with and I feel grateful to connect with a kindred spirit on many levels! Excited to work together and see where this adventure takes us!
