The Howland Company ceased operations and the corporation dissolved in December 2023. We began in 1975, it was a long and extraordinarily successful run, but all things come to an end.

But not entirely--We've formed a new firm, Howland & Lawrence Chamber Services, LLC, to continue support for operators of Howland antenna measurement systems and components. These systems have been rock-steady reliable over decades of operation, but when you need support, we'll be here. And we are ready to help with other requirements too: RF chamber repair and maintenance, anechoic material repair and installation, measurement system service and maintenance, and more. Contact us to learn more.

The Howland Company is sad to announce the passing of our founder, Ray Howland. He passed away January 29th, just a few days before his 89th birthday, after a long illness. He had been retired from The Howland Company for several years, but his presence was always felt.

Ray was born in 1934 in LaGrange, Georgia. His father was a pastor and his mother a schoolteacher. He spent his childhood and youth in North Carolina and eastern Pennsylvania. He attended Rice University, served in the US Army in Germany and California, and following his Army service continued his studies at George Washington University and Cornell.

Ray began working with engineering firm Jansky & Bailey as he was completing his master’s degree at Cornell, and also worked as a researcher at Cornell Aeronautical Lab. In 1965 he moved his young family to Atlanta, Georgia, and began work as a design engineer in the Instrumentation Division of Scientific-Atlanta. As he rose through the ranks at S-A, his responsibilities moved away from engineering and into program management and sales. That was not the future he saw for himself, so in 1974 he left Scientific-Atlanta and launched The Howland Company as an independent consulting engineering firm. The continued success of The Howland Company nearly 50 years later is a testament to the values, vision, and skills he brought to the project, along with his success in recruiting some of the very best minds in the industry to join him and share the journey.

Ray Howland is survived by his wife Linda, two sons and three stepsons and their families, including ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His youngest child, daughter Nancy, passed away in 2013.

Take a look at this video from Naval Air Systems Command highlighting some of the newest upgrades and successes at the Air Combat Environment Test & Evaluation Facility (ACETEF) anechoic chamber. The Howland Company led one of the original requirements definition concept studies, then went on to prepare the and specs for and work, and we monitored the shielding & anechoic construction and testing activities. We worked hard to design in flexibility to accommodate growth and new technologies, and it's very gratifying to see that's exactly what's happening, decades after the original design and construction.

Engineers from The Howland Company advised the Air Force/contractor team making a series of major upgrades to the Benefield Anechoic Facility (BAF), and then conducted RF measurements to validate the completed work. The BAF is the largest anechoic chamber ever built and after nearly 30 years in operation remains a vital R&D facility. It was a privilege to work with personnel from the 412th Electronic Warfare Group and 772d Test Squadron at Edwards AF and contractors HHI Corp., Michael Baker International, AP Americas, and Alarm Control Systems.

We were excited to hear a few days ago from Hannah Jackson of New Hampshire. Hannah is an active member of her Girl Scout troop and they have been working to earn their "Think Like an Engineer" badge. (How many of you reading this are thinking "Wow, I know a few engineers who might want to look into that badge themselves"?)

Kidding aside, it's a terrific program--the Scouts learn critical thinking skills, they learn how engineers identify the problem they want to solve, how they organize their thoughts around design criteria and constraints, and then they put those skills to work: identifying a problem that their community needs to solve, designing a solution, and building and testing technology to solve the problem. These young women are going to be taking on the problems we older folks haven't managed to solve yet, and that makes a bunch of old(er) guys like us feel pretty good about the future.

Hannah's Troop was learning about automotive electronics and radios, which is what led them to our website. Hannah asked if we wouldn't mind sharing another site she found useful, and we're more than happy to: https://www.partsgeek.com/mmparts/car_electronics_all_about_circuits.html.

And we'd like to share a couple more links with Hannah and her fellow Scouts, to the IEEE Women in Engineering (https://wie.ieee.org/) and INCOSE Empowering Women Leaders in Systems Engineering (https://www.incose.org/incose-member-resources/ewlse) programs. Thanks for reaching out to us Hannah, best of luck, and ... don't forget about us when it's time to start sending out your résumé! 😃

A video from Naval Air Systems Command highlighting the continuous upgrades to the capabilities of the Air Combat Environment Test & Evaluation Facility (ACETEF), one of the US military's premier facilities for distributed simulation and electromagnetic test and evaluation. The Howland Company played a key role on the design team of the ACETEF facility back in the 1990s.

Take a look at this stunning virtual tour of Laird Connectivity's OTA test system, a Howland Model 3100 Wireless Test Lab. This one is unique--Howland engineers worked with the users to fit the 3100WTL system into an existing anechoic chamber. Getting double duty from this chamber added powerful test and 3D measurement capability without a large increase in facility footprint. This installation was completed several years ago and it's very rewarding to see the system going strong, performing well for its users, and highlighted so beautifully on their web site.
