More to it than meets the eye.
When you are driving down a country road (or even a highway or interstate) and you see cattle grazing happily behind a split rail fence or treated wood post/barbed wire fence, think about the process - just for a minute - that created the fence that keeps the cows safe and out of your lane of traffic. The fencing was likely pressure treated at a plant where they take great care to ensure longevity of the posts. They were transported to farming stores where they were purchased by real-life ranchers, who spent a lot of time installing miles and miles of fencing.

Know Your Wood®

What are the maintenance requirements for treated wood? No maintenance is needed to maintain resistance to decay fungi and termites. However, some maintenance will help keep your project looking beautiful for years to come.
• To help protect against moisture damage, apply water repellent after your project is completed and the wood has had a chance to thoroughly dry.
• You can use a deck cleaner/brightener every couple of years to freshen the look of your deck. Bleach is not recommended since it contains chlorides and can cause hardware corrosion.
• After cleaning the deck, reapply a water repellent or water repellent stain to restore color to the deck.

During Deck Safety Month, take a few minutes to check the most critical areas of your deck for safety and strength. Those areas include the ledger boards (where the decks are essentially joined to the house or building), the joists that hold the deck surface itself, and the support posts or columns anchoring the structure to the ground. Check the fasteners. Does your deck need cleaning and brightening? Now is the time.

This past week, Arxada joined colleagues from within the wood industry to discuss topics related to the betterment of the industry as a whole. At the 122nd American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) Annual Meeting held in Asheville, NC, nearly 500 professionals heard talks about sustainability and forest management, as well as quality control and innovation. Min Chen, Technical Project Manager for Arxada, was elected to AWPA’s Executive Committee. Her three-year term began directly after the 122nd annual meeting. Stephen Uphill, Associate Director of Research and Development for Arxada, presented on advanced technologies in wood protection, discussing AI as a tool for innovation and how Arxada is leading the way utilizing modern R&D equipment to accelerate preservative screening. Justin Duma, Senior Research Scientist with Arxada, collaborated with others in the industry to present the AWPA rating system. They did a hands-on demonstration on how samples are visually rated in the field, which is key to wood preservative standardizations.

Former Arxada colleague, Tim Carey, received AWPA’s prestigious Award of Merit for his dedication to the industry. During his career, Tim influenced many and championed products innovated for the industrial sector. Congratulations Tim!
