Magnum got a screaming deal on a couple of preowned powdered metal presses, but the seller kept the die sets and frames. The Japanese press manufacturer refuses to sell replacements for second-hand presses and would not share drawings. So we decided to have our sister company, MESH Solutions, design and build them from scratch. They work great and can pump out excellent parts! 😎

Aluminum chips pile up, someone has to deal with them, and it’s easy to treat it as an afterthought.

At Magnum Metals here in Ashland, Ohio, we buy aluminum chips and turnings directly from machine shops and other manufacturers that generate them.

Material this light and bulky gets expensive to move, so we’re concentrating on Ohio and nearby states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. If you’re in that range and have a steady stream, reach out with the specifics of your material and we'll offer a bid!

OFF-SPEC ≠ NO VALUE

A metal powder can be unusable for one manufacturing process and still have value somewhere else.

Maybe the particle size is outside spec.
Maybe the apparent density changed.Maybe the chemistry is slightly outside the original requirement.
Maybe the material no longer fits the application it was purchased for.

That does not automatically mean the material is worthless.

At Magnum Metals, we look beyond the original specification and ask a different question: What can this material become next?

Sometimes the best recycling solution isn't simply melting a material down. Sometimes it's finding a way to put it back to work.

"Metal powder is still metal. So why won’t scrap yards handle it?"

When most people think of metal recycling, they picture familiar scrap:
Steel plate.
Aluminum extrusion.
Cars.
Copper pipe.
Appliances.
Cans.

Traditional scrap yards are built around materials that can be identified, sorted, weighed, cut, crushed, baled and shipped in bulk to a mill or foundry.

Metal powders are different.

Powders, fines and dusts require a much more specialized approach.
🔹 Chemistry matters. A powder may look like another material but have an entirely different alloy composition or downstream value.
🔹 Particle size matters. Fine powder behaves very differently from chips, turnings or solid scrap.
🔹 Contamination matters. Oils, oxides, refractory material, other metals and process debris can dramatically affect where a powder can be reused.
🔹 Sampling matters. With thousands—or millions—of individual particles in a container, understanding what is actually present is critical.
🔹 Processing matters. Screening, separation, blending, densification or other processing may be needed before the material can return to the supply chain.
🔹 The end market matters. A traditional scrap buyer may have nowhere to send a powder, even when that powder contains metal value.

That last point is important:
A material can have significant metal value and still be a poor fit for a conventional scrap yard.

Copper powder doesn't get much attention outside metallurgy circles, but it's a surprisingly versatile material once you start looking at where it ends up.

Atomized copper and copper-alloy powders show up in electrical contacts and connectors, brazing pastes used to join components in aerospace and industrial assemblies, friction materials for brake and clutch systems, self-lubricating bearings, additive manufacturing (metal injection molding and 3D printing), and EMI shielding and thermal management components. And that's a small slice of it! The full range of applications is much, much larger.

Part of what makes copper powder useful across so many industries is how tunable it is. Particle size, shape, and purity can all be adjusted for the application, so the same base material ends up performing very different jobs depending on how it's processed.
