"Metal powder is still metal. So why won’t scrap yards handle it?"
When most people think of metal recycling, they picture familiar scrap:
Steel plate.
Aluminum extrusion.
Cars.
Copper pipe.
Appliances.
Cans.
Traditional scrap yards are built around materials that can be identified, sorted, weighed, cut, crushed, baled and shipped in bulk to a mill or foundry.
Metal powders are different.
Powders, fines and dusts require a much more specialized approach.
🔹 Chemistry matters. A powder may look like another material but have an entirely different alloy composition or downstream value.
🔹 Particle size matters. Fine powder behaves very differently from chips, turnings or solid scrap.
🔹 Contamination matters. Oils, oxides, refractory material, other metals and process debris can dramatically affect where a powder can be reused.
🔹 Sampling matters. With thousands—or millions—of individual particles in a container, understanding what is actually present is critical.
🔹 Processing matters. Screening, separation, blending, densification or other processing may be needed before the material can return to the supply chain.
🔹 The end market matters. A traditional scrap buyer may have nowhere to send a powder, even when that powder contains metal value.
That last point is important:
A material can have significant metal value and still be a poor fit for a conventional scrap yard.
