Water does not take the day off. Wastewater does not take the day off.

Today, while a lot of the country is at a cookout, operators and maintenance technicians across the country are on shift keeping treatment plants, lift stations, and industrial systems running.

We wanted to take a minute to say thank you to them, and to the plant and facilities managers holding a schedule together with a smaller crew, and to our own field service technicians answering the phone on a holiday weekend because a customer's pump could not wait.

Happy Labor Day, and thank you to everyone keeping things running today.

Some pumps are built for water. Progressive cavity pumps are built for everything water pumps cannot handle.

Thick, abrasive, shear sensitive, high viscosity, full of solids. That is the everyday reality for a lot of the media moving through wastewater plants, food and beverage lines, and industrial processes across the country. A centrifugal pump asked to move that kind of fluid will struggle, wear fast, or fail outright.

Wood Equipment Company is proud to represent NETZSCH, one of the names that solved that problem best.

A helical rotor turning inside a stator forms a series of sealed cavities that progress steadily from suction to discharge, carrying fluid at a constant rate with minimal pulsation and low shear. That is why progressive cavity technology performs where centrifugal and even many rotary lobe designs cannot:

Near pulsation free flow, critical for dosing and metering Gentle handling of shear sensitive media Solids and fibrous material handling that would tear apart other pump types A wide viscosity range from near water thin to barely flowing Self priming and dry run tolerant designs

Rotor and stator selection is where performance is won or lost, and that is where distributor support earns its keep.

We wrote up how NETZSCH shows up on the floor across wastewater and biosolids, food and beverage, and industrial process applications, and what we add on the application engineering, parts, and training side:

The cheapest pump on the quote sheet is almost never the cheapest pump.

Over a typical service life, purchase price is a small fraction of what a centrifugal pump costs you. Energy and maintenance are the rest. And a pump selected for the flow someone estimated during design, rather than the flow you actually run, will sit off its best efficiency point for twenty years while you pay for it every month.

That is the argument for taking selection seriously, and it is why we represent Sulzer in Virginia. World class hydraulic design, a range that runs from simple end suction to multistage high pressure, and a real efficiency story behind it.

Send us your duty point, liquid, temperature, specific gravity, and viscosity. If you do not have a system curve, we will help you build one.

Wood Equipment Company will be at WaterJAM 2026, the joint annual meeting of the Virginia Water Environment Association and the Virginia Section of AWWA, taking place September 14 to 17 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Our team will be ready to talk through real world pump and liquid handling challenges facing municipal water and wastewater teams, from lift station upgrades to custom fabricated skids and control panel projects. As a Virginia SWaM certified distributor with SBA SDVOSB and VOSB designations, we also work closely with agencies navigating supplier diversity and procurement requirements.

If you will be at WaterJAM, stop by and say hello. We would love to hear about what you are working on.

Net Positive Suction Head, or NPSH, is one of the most misunderstood pump concepts in industrial applications. Put simply, if NPSH available falls below NPSH required, cavitation will occur, damaging impellers, seals, and reducing pump life. This is a calculation worth verifying before a pump is ever selected, not after it starts failing in the field. Our engineers evaluate suction conditions on every application we quote to make sure the numbers hold up in real operating conditions. Reach out to run the calculation on your system. 📞 804 798 8844

Late summer marks a turning point for facility and plant managers across industrial, commercial, and municipal operations. Production schedules begin shifting toward year end targets, seasonal demand patterns start to change, and fall maintenance planning moves to the front of everyone's mind.

Pumps that have run hard through the summer face compounding stress. Higher ambient temperatures increase the risk of overheating in motors and seals. Elevated flow demands push equipment closer to its limits. Debris and sediment from spring and summer runoff can accelerate wear in impellers and wear rings. By late summer, small inefficiencies often grow into measurable performance losses, higher energy costs, or early warning signs of failure.

Replacing or upgrading before the fall maintenance season gives operations teams a critical advantage. Rather than reacting to a breakdown during a compressed fall schedule, facilities can make planned, proactive decisions.

WEC works with industrial, commercial, and municipal customers nationwide to evaluate pump performance and manage the process from specification through installation. Read the full breakdown here.
