Chassis scanning...
I'm often asked why I use tape. It depends on the project. In this case, the thickness of the tape is irrelevant to the dimensions. It is however a large scan and absolutely necessary for your sanity when having to remove large quantities of reflective references.

Some pretty fun tricks of the trade were applied to scanning this Sweet rack and pinion. The final scan was done with only one scan; tweaking the software so that I could pick up the part and scan the other side in the middle of the process.
Notice the shiny fittings, cylinders and joints along with the matt, rubber boots, satin casting and machined bodies. All of these surfaces, finishes and details present their own respective challenges to laser light. So my little ball of details lets you in on at least two tricks for scanning complex parts.
That said, the product (the output data) is relative; you need to have a clear understanding of what the scan will be used for. In this case, the customer needed the envelope and how that envelope will apply to their new Super Car.
