A Professional Geologist with a BS in Geology from the University of Maryland, he has led complex environmental projects nationwide, with a strong focus in the Mid-Atlantic region, spanning environmental assessments, soil and groundwater remediation, brownfields redevelopment, regulatory compliance, industrial hygiene, emergency response, and environmental health and safety oversight.

We’re excited to welcome Matthew Karalus, P.E. as our new Geotechnical Department Manager and Principal in our Chantilly, VA office. Matt brings more than a decade of geotechnical engineering and CMT experience across major commercial, transportation, infrastructure, and data center projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic. With a strong background in subsurface investigations, foundation design, and retaining wall engineering, he has led engineering teams and supported field and laboratory operations to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective solutions. In his new role, Matt will lead our Northern Virginia geotechnical operations, mentor staff, and provide principal-level technical leadership on complex projects. Last week, Hillis-Carnes’ Vice President/Regional Manager, Chris Hillis, Business Development Manager, Gina DePinto, Business Development Associate, Chrissy Rude, GEO Division Manager, Will Harris, CMT Division Manager, Scott Horst, and Project Manager, Stevie Howard attended the NAIOP-Maryland Holiday Luncheon at the Marriott Owings Mills Metro Centre.
