All machines requires regular lubrication maintenance to operate at peak performance.

This video shows lubrication of of a metal lathe:

• Headstock
• Gearbox
• Open gears
• Oil buttons

Regular scheduled lubrication of your lathe is essential to ensure the reliability of the machine and to maintain its performance.

Dave offers a number of helpful lathe lubrication tips in this video, including:

"Lubrication is probably the most important thing you can do to keep your machine humming along for a lifetime. The type of oil you use in the machine is very important. Use a 30W non-detergent oil. We are often asked about using automobile oil which we don't recommend because it has detergents which suspend debris in the oil. The non-detergent oil allows particles to settle to the bottom of the oil reservoir. You don't want your gears bathed with oil and debris. 30W, non-detergent oil, is used in air compressors and most agricultural implements."

The machine that Dave is using for demonstration purposes is the Granite MAX 1324. This lathe-mill-drill combo machine sets the standard for premium quality bench top machine tools.

Putting a combination machine tool in your shop allows you to have the capabilities of a small machine shop without sacrificing too much floor space.

The Granite 3-in-1 “big machine” features and premium quality is comparable to other larger, more expensive machine tools. PLUS, you'll have three machines in one.

Nearly 30,000 Smithy machines are working hard every day in shops across North America. This fact let's you know that Smithy machines do set the standard for quality.

How & Why - Leveling a Small Lathe - Shown on Granite 3-in1 Machine Tool

Shows the proper way to level a machine tool is part of initial setup for your combo machine. This process also applies for standard bench lathes. This is an important step to assure you get the best results from your machine.

The basic purpose for leveling is to set the foundation of the machine so all is level with horizontal. A more important reason to level your lathe is to make sure there is no twist in the bed of your machine.

Dave gives you several helpful tips for setting up your lathe.

This Video Shows How to Clean and Adjust Gibs (Y Axis) on Metal Lathe - Granite Combo Machine Cross-feed

You can remove excess movement or slop from your lathe/mill work table by cleaning and readjusting the Y axis lathe gib. Dave gives you detailed instructions on how to remove the gib and clean and lubricate the gib in preparation for returning the gib to it's slot on the underside of the lathe/mill work table.

Once the gib is replaced in the worktable you will next tighten the gib into place by sequentially tightening the gib set screws until the table is tightened and the hand wheel has some resistance, but still turns freely.
