Looks like ice storage is making a comeback in California! Southern California Edison recently selected 264 MW of energy storage (which also includes batteries) in a recent RFP. It is a significant first step towards the CPUC's requirement for 1,325 MW of energy storage by 2020.

Southern California Edison plans to retire some power plants and replace them with storage — including conventional batteries and giant ice packs — as well as other power generators.

Interesting paper about the impacts of climate change on GDP and the potential impacts in the future. While global warming to date has reduced energy use, if the warming trend continues it will have a significant negative impact on the global economy.
