Looks like ice storage is making a comeback in California! Southern California Edison recently selected 264 MW of energy storage (which also includes batteries) in a recent RFP. It is a significant first step towards the CPUC's requirement for 1,325 MW of energy storage by 2020.

Southern California Edison plans to retire some power plants and replace them with storage — including conventional batteries and giant ice packs — as well as other power generators.
