Transmissions Speeds & Rear Axle Oil Seal Sizes

Transmissions used in 9N and 2N tractors had 3 forward speeds. The oval-shaped gear shift cover was also part of the steering gear box. They have an outer axle seal with an outside diameter of 3.485", and is 0.665" thick. They did not use an inner axle seal.

Transmissions used in 8N tractors had 4 forward speeds. The gear shift cover is square/rectangular. Tractors prior to s/n 8N488753 had an outer axle seal with an outside diameter of 3.756", but did not use an inner seal.

8N's after s/n 488753 used an inner axle seal. The diameter of the outer axle seal increased to 3.770".

Tip of the week: 8N Steering Gear Box Identification / interchange

The steering gear boxes on the 8N tractors came in two variations. These variations are best identified by the number of bolts attaching the adjuster plates to the base of the steering gear housing.

Steering gear assemblies before s/n 216989 had 4 bolts holding the adjuster plates. The sector shafts stuck out through the center of these plates.

Later steering gear assemblies, after s/n 216988, had 2 bolts attaching the adjuster plates to the base housing. Each plate had a slotted bolt, with locking nut, in the center of the plate. The sector shafts stuck out through the sides of the steering box, beside the adjuster plates.

Late-style gear boxes can be used on earlier tractors. This requires using the late-style pitman arms and modifying the dash panel.

Determination of Sleeve Wall Thickness: .090 / Heavy-wall vs. .040 / Thin-wall Sleeves: Make sure you are ordering the correct rebuild kit for your tractor.

The diamonds or stars with the serial number denote whether the engine originally had cast iron or hardened steel sleeves.

Engines with the star stamped before and after the serial number originally had the steel sleeves with a sleeve wall thickness of 0.040 inch (40/1000), referred to as "thin wall". This included 9N, 2N, and 8N prior to s/n 433578.

***BEWARE: Over the years, engines having "thin wall" sleeves may have been re-bored to use the later "heavy wall" sleeves. Check the sleeve wall thickness BEFORE ordering replacement sleeves!!!

Engines with the diamond stamped before and after the serial number originally had the cast iron sleeves with a sleeve wall thickness of 0.090 inch (90/1000), referred to as "heavy wall" or "thick wall". These were used on 8N s/n 8N433578 and later.
