ILIAMNA, Alaska – Iliamna Natives Limited (INL) President Lorene “Sue” Anelon and Iliamna Development Corporation CEO Lisa Reimers issued the following statement today regarding the decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to deny a permit for the Pebble project:

“We are disappointed by today’s news that the USACE denied a permit for the Pebble Project. INL and IDC has more than fifteen years of experience working with the Pebble Limited Partnership (PLP) during the exploration and permitting stages of the Pebble Project. It was a remarkable time to live in the region because we could provide our shareholders and regional partners with jobs to support themselves; as well as keeping our shareholders living in their Alaska Native communities. Most importantly, we saw firsthand the hard work that PLP staff put into making a proposed mine that would prove that there can be a coexistence between mining and subsistence/commercial fisheries in the Bristol Bay region. We believed that the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) released by the USACE in July addressed this directly. However, we believe that the USACE decision to deny the permit is contrary to what stated in the FEIS.”

“We were reassured by the USACE during our consultation meetings for the EIS that politics would not play a role in the record of decision (ROD) for Pebble and that their decision was solely influenced by the scientific findings presented by PLP. This decision came as a shock to our shareholders who were under the impression that this would be a transparent and fair process. We believed that USACE took our comments seriously during the draft EIS process. It seems that outside influences played a bigger role in this process than the local stakeholders—who still believe in and fully support the Pebble Project.”

“We understand that there is an appeal process in place to reexamine the decision by USACE. We are confident that this will result in a positive decision for Pebble and our community. We are witnessing our local people leaving the communities in search of more economic opportunity. If we continue down this process and there are no alternative projects on the horizon, we will expect our communities to shrink in population because our local people must leave to find gainful employment. This alone will contribute to the death of our small communities, as well as our cultures, since younger people are not able to learn their traditions from the elders in the community.”

Iliamna Natives Limited (INL) is the ANCSA Village Corporation for the Village of Iliamna, and owner of 69,000 acres of land in and around the Village of Iliamna and Lake Iliamna, southeast of the Pebble Project. INL manages its land and resources in the best interests of its 160 shareholders, the vast majority of which are original ANCSA shareholders.

Dear Friends,

As many of you have heard, one of our founders and current board member, Myrtle Anelon, passed away yesterday. Over the next few days, there will be opportunities to pay your respects in Anchorage, Newhalen, and Iliamna.

Between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24, Myrtle will be at the Legacy Funeral Home in Anchorage. In order to visit Myrtle, people are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing. We encourage people to visit her in Anchorage if they cannot attend the funeral services in Newhalen this weekend. The address for the funeral home is:

Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home
11621 Old Seward Hwy
Anchorage, AK, 99515

On Saturday, July 25, Myrtle will be flown out to Iliamna where she would like to spend one last night in the home she shared with her husband, Elia. Again, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we encourage only immediate family members, who are wearing masks and practicing social distancing, to visit her at home.

The following day, Sunday, July 26, Myrtle will be moved to the Transfiguration of Our Lord Church in Newhalen, AK. There will be a service led by Father David. We will update the post when we have an exact time for the services on Sunday.

There will be a funeral service and communion for Myrtle on Monday, July 27, at the Transfiguration of Our Lord Church in Newhalen. Following the service, Myrtle will be buried next to her mother overlooking Lake Iliamna. The burial will be located on the hill next to the Iliamna Village Council building. The burial is open to the public, however, we again encourage people to respect Myrtle and her family by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing.

Finally, on Monday the 27th, there will be a community potlach to celebrate the life of Myrtle. Family and friends are still working on the location for the potlach. But, if you do decide to come to the potlach, please bring a dish.

We appreciate everybody's condolences and support for Myrtle. She was an amazing mother, grandmother, and person. We hope that everyone she had an impact on will be able to pay their respects and celebrate her life.

Thank you,
INL Management and Board of Directors
