What do boat captains, environmental specialists, surveyors, and PistenBully operators have in common?

They all contribute to telecom infrastructure development in Alaska, an industry where UIC Commercial Services companies are playing a greater role.

Teams from UMIAQ Environmental, Bowhead Transport, UMIAQ Design, and UIC Oil & Gas Support are working on a range of activities: from permitting and planning to deployment and repair.

Supporting telecom infrastructure looks different for each of these companies, but through their work our employees have a common role: improving connectivity for Alaska communities.

As a kid, Blake Anderson was always excited to see new development happening around him. He told himself he wanted to be a part of it someday. Now he's running a successful heavy civil construction company.

Blake was promoted to General Manager of Qayaq Construction this year, taking on strategic and operational leadership across all of the company's projects. His resume includes a lot of projects his young self would admire: ice bridge construction on the Sagavanirktok River, airport improvements in Tununak and Kiana, stretches of improved highway along the Elliott (pictured here), Dalton and Richardson highways, and the Manh Choh Access Road near Tok.

He’s looking forward to Qayaq’s future contributions to Alaska’s heavy civil landscape. “Our employees are the reason our company is so successful, and I'm fortunate to be able to lead such a great group."

Outside of work, Blake enjoys golf, camping, and spending time with his wife and two young children, pictured here on a Mother’s Day outing to Palmer’s Reindeer Farm.

Congratulations, Blake!

Our UIC Oil & Gas Support teams get to see some of the most beautiful and remote country in Alaska.

These photos are from the 12 emergency fuel hauls they made from Deadhorse to Anaktuvuk Pass between January and March this year.

During an extended period of extreme temperatures, the isolated community wasn’t getting its regular air fuel deliveries. No fuel means no heat, so the UICOGS team took to the Community Winter Access Trail, fording multiple streams, sleeping in their cabs, with their progress over rough terrain ranging from just 1.5 to 5 mph!

Overall they delivered about 100,000 gallons to a community in need.

Our teams are dedicated and driven by the impact they make for Alaskans. As operations director Joe Barron puts it simply: “It’s the UIC way.”

A lot of what makes infrastructure projects possible in Alaska happens well before any ground is broken. UMIAQ Environmental's Emily McDonald and Josh Fortin are at the Alaska Infrastructure Development Symposium this week, representing the permitting, NEPA compliance, and GIS work that moves projects from concept through agency authorization.

On the telecom side alone, the team has helped bring improved connectivity to dozens of Alaska communities. That work means navigating environmental clearances across multiple federal agencies, building NEPA documentation, and using GIS mapping to identify potential routing conflicts early so developers have options before they're committed to a path.

It's the kind of work that doesn't make it into project photos, but it's what keeps projects on schedule.
