Brothers Bert and Jerry Carney established the Carney Bros. Auto Wrecking firm in 1956 on South Duff. The firm salvaged used cars and trucks and sold auto parts, specializing in hard-to-find parts.

Jerry’s sons, Tom and Matt, eventually took over the business. Jerry Carney & Sons still operates today on SE 5th Street. This unpublished Ames Tribune photo from June 1958 shows the salvage yard south of the creek.
