We will be closed Saturday morning to honor our dear friend Doug Smith aka “Pokey the Clown”. We will open when we return from the service until 3pm.

Douglas Scott Smith (Pokey the Clown) of Panhandle Texas passed away March 8, 2026, in Plano Texas.

Rosary will be said at 6:00 PM, Friday, March 13, 2026 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount. Memorial service will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Hillside Christian Church, 6100 S. Soncy. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Born December 10, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio to Harold Paul Smith Sr. and Beatrice Merrick Smith. Doug graduated From Panhandle High School and married the love of his life, Karen Lee Todd Smith on October 8, 1966, at the age of 19. He was drafted into the army two weeks later. They started a family before being deployed to Vietnam as a U.S. Army Spec 5 Crew Chief in 1967. After returning home from Vietnam in 1968 he continued to serve in the military until 1969. He went to work at Bell Helicopter before going to work at the family business “Dust Stopper” Storm Window and Doors in Panhandle. Doug loved to spend time with his family, help raise money for charities throughout the Texas Panhandle, and his passion for racing cars.

Doug was known for his work as “Pokey the Clown” throughout the Texas Panhandle, Oklahoma, Kansas and even stretching to DFW. His passion to help others could be seen through the many charities he loved to support like the WRCA, March of Dimes, Make-A-Wish, Salvation Army, and many others. If there was a parade, car show, or an opportunity to volunteer Pokey was there.

He loved his hometown and supported the Panhandle sports teams, high school band, and the FFA. Pokey’s love for his country and fellow veterans was evident wherever he went. Anytime there was a need all that anyone had to do was pickup the phone and Pokey would be there.

He loved his wife, children, and grandchild with all his heart. Even with his busy schedule, Doug would not miss events his kids were involved in. He would be at all their football games, hockey tournaments, and band trips. He loved his city of Panhandle and would regularly be seen building a new car or getting himself into a new project that would turn heads. Doug always enjoyed including Stacy, Jeff, and Steven in his newest, wildest, adventures. When it came time for Doug to become a grandfather, he welcomed the new role with open arms and a smile on his face. He was the “Po” to 5 grandchildren and was blessed to welcome two great grandchildren. There was rarely a big event that Po as the grandkids called him, would miss.

Pokey was a staple in the car community regularly attending car shows, spending many summers working the infield at Route 66 and on the drag strip in his younger years. He collected many miles on his cars and created even more friendships and memories that will last forever.

Doug is survived by his son Jeff Smith (Amarillo, TX) and fiancée Mia Rodriquez, son Steven and Jill Smith (Southlake, TX), daughter-in-law Sue Smith (Amarillo, TX), grandchildren Hagen Smith (Amarillo, TX), Blake and Kennedi Smith (NRH, TX), Blaine Smith and fiancée Riley Cole (Southlake), Allanah Smith (Amarillo Texas), Aubrie Smith (Amarillo Texas),great granddaughters Liberty and Raina, and many nieces and nephews.

Doug is preceded in death by his loving wife Karen Lee Todd Smith, daughter Stacy Esquibel, son-in-law Rosendo Esquibel, brother Harold Paul Smith Jr. and his parents Harold Paul Smith Sr. and Beatrice Merrick Smith.

Family asks that in lieu of flowers that you make donations to the WRCA, Panhandle FFA, or a charity of your choice.
