Driving a large axial fan in a cooling tower is a specific engineering challenge. The motor speed has to be reduced to the required fan speed efficiently, reliably, and without generating excess heat or noise across thousands of operating hours. The Gen II GT1712's double reduction design was built around that exact requirement.

By combining spiral bevel and helical gear stages, the GT1712 transmits torque efficiently while streamlining the number of manufactured components, which directly supports long operating life and reduces points of potential failure.

The improved gear design also handles the momentary shock loads that occur during fan startup, ensuring reliable operation from the first rotation. Gears are produced from AISI 8620 or 4320 alloy steel, case carburized and finished per specification for the strength and longevity these applications require.

Application-specific design at that level is what engineers writing the spec and operators living with the result both depend on.

Fire protection systems don't get warmup time. When the alarm triggers, the pump starts, and everything in the system has to perform immediately and without hiccups.

That's not a worst-case scenario, that's the job description.

Amarillo Gear fire pump drives are built with a 1.50 service factor specifically to handle the high-inertia demands of that first start, and a mean time between failure of 50,000 hours compared to 30,000 from the next best option. Every unit is engineered to exceed FM, NFPA, and AGMA 6013 B16 standards, and tested for vibration, temperature, and performance before it ships.
