Teardrop or structural?

Most warehouses never make this choice. They inherit it. The rack that came with the building, the rack the last tenant left, the rack a dealer had in stock the week you needed it. It works fine right up until you expand, take a forklift hit, or start storing something heavier than the system was rated for.

The difference is one connection. Teardrop hooks a beam into a punched hole and locks it with a clip. Structural bolts a heavier beam through a heavier column. Everything else, price, lead time, how it takes a hit, how it ages, follows from that.

What your rack is worth.

Nobody plans to sell used pallet rack. A lease ends, a building sells, the operation moves and the steel does not fit the new footprint. Then somebody makes an offer and it is lower than you expected, and nobody explains why.

Here is why. The offer is resale value minus the cost of getting the steel out of your building. Teardrop from a known manufacturer sells. Mixed sizes and odd connection styles mostly do not. And under all of it there is a floor: scrap steel, which is what rack is worth when nobody can resell it.

Plan your liquor store layout.

The steel arrives, it goes where there is room, and the floor plan is set for the next ten years by accident. That is how most package stores end up with their best bottles in the worst spot.

A few things that decide more than the fixtures do. Tennessee gives you one public entrance, so your floor is a loop and not a path. The first fifteen feet inside are a decompression zone where nobody registers product. Selling height sits between 48 and 60 inches, and everything above 72 is storage that happens to be visible.

Stop digging for kegs.

If your oldest half barrel is always the one buried behind Tuesday's delivery, that is not a labor problem. That is a rack problem.

A keg flow lane pitches back to front. You load from the back, gravity walks the kegs forward, and the one sitting at the pick face is always the oldest one. FIFO stops being a chore somebody has to remember.
