Grind Lap Services, Inc Precision grinding, lapping, and honing services that help manufacturers achieve tight tolerances, so

Like many family-owned businesses, ours is a story of ingenuity and opportunity. Grind Lap’s founder John Gallichio spent his early career in sales and support for Speedfam, the industry-leading lapping machine manufacturer. As he got to know the market better, he envisioned a business that could provide precise technical expertise as well as unrivaled personal service, quality and on-time deliver

y. In 1978, he took what he had, bought his first lapping machine, and opened his own 3,000-square-foot shop in Franklin Park, IL. He grew Grind Lap by acquiring machines, adding services, and building one of the most highly skilled and talented teams in the business. For over 40 years, Grind Lap has won loyal customers that value the personal attention and technical design and engineering expertise we bring to every project. Since our founding, we’ve grown considerably and today our customer base is nationwide. At heart, we’re still a family-owned, family-operated company. And we still provide fair prices, expert services, and personal attention to customers in a wide range of industries and end markets.

Changing a precision grinding supplier isn't something manufacturers do on a whim.

Once a supplier consistently delivers quality parts, meets deadlines, and understands your expectations, there's little reason to start over.

As Frank Ross shared during a recent discussion:
"As long as that vendor maintains the quality, maintains the turnaround time, and maintains the pricing, you don't leave because there's no incentive."

That really resonated with me.

In manufacturing, trust isn't built overnight. It's earned one successful project at a time.

When companies do begin evaluating new suppliers, it's rarely because they're chasing the lowest price.

More often, they're looking for:
- Better communication
- Consistent quality
- Reliable delivery
- A true manufacturing partner

The strongest supplier relationships aren't transactional—they're collaborative.

Question: What's the number one quality you value most in a manufacturing partner?

We've all seen it.

Three quotes come back.

One is significantly higher than the others.

The instinct?

❌ "They're too expensive."

But that's not always what's happening.

During a recent conversation with our team at Grind Lap, Frank Ross shared something that every manufacturing buyer should hear:
"Sometimes our price will be twice someone else's… we just misinterpreted something—or they did. You never know until you ask."

Different suppliers often interpret prints differently.

One quote may include inspections, additional operations, tighter tolerances, or assumptions another supplier overlooked.

Before eliminating a supplier based on price alone, ask:
✔ Are we quoting the exact same scope?
✔ Did someone interpret the print differently?
✔ Is there an opportunity to clarify requirements?

A five-minute conversation can save weeks of production headaches.

The best manufacturing improvements often happen before production begins.
Many companies think of a grinding shop as the final step in manufacturing.
At Grind Lap, engineering starts much earlier.

In our latest blog, Frank Ross explains how engineering support helps manufacturers:
• Improve manufacturability
• Reduce production costs
• Refine prototype designs
• Optimize tolerances
• Prevent expensive manufacturing issues

As Frank says:
"They only have it from their design perspective. They don't really understand the manufacturing aspect of it."

That's where experience makes the difference.

Not every part needs the grinding process you think it does.

Many manufacturers ask for one process because it's familiar. But sometimes a different approach, or a combination of processes, delivers better quality at a lower cost.

That's why engineering review matters.

In our newest blog, Frank Ross explains why having multiple precision grinding services under one roof helps customers:
• Choose the right process
• Reduce manufacturing costs
• Improve quality
• Shorten lead times
• Eliminate multiple vendors

As Frank puts it:
"If you go to just a centerless shop, they're only going to talk centerless. When you come to Grind Lap, we talk about it all."

Before your next project, let the experts review your drawing. The best solution may be different than you expect.

Many manufacturing problems don't begin on the shop floor—they begin during the design stage.

One of the best ways to reduce production costs and improve quality is to involve your precision grinding partner before production starts.

In our newest blog, Frank Ross shares how early engineering collaboration helps manufacturers:
- Reduce machining costs
- Optimize tolerances
- Improve material selection
- Prevent heat treat distortion
- Design parts that are easier to manufacture

As Frank says:
"The earliest you get the engineering involved...you can design out complex manufacturing processes that cost time and money."

If you're designing a new component or refining an existing one, this is a conversation worth having before the first chip is cut.

The best manufacturing partners aren't just measured by what they make. They're measured by how they respond when things don't go as planned.

One insight from Nelly Ramirez really stood out to me:
"Take ownership and get in front of it."

That's the kind of mindset that builds trust in manufacturing. Mistakes happen. Strong partnerships are built on honesty, accountability, and communication.

The best suppliers don't just process parts. They help prevent problems.

One of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with Nelly Ramirez was this:
Great manufacturers don't wait until a job is complete to communicate.

They call when something doesn't look right.

That simple habit saves time, protects budgets, and strengthens customer relationships.

That's what a true precision grinding partner does.

Manufacturers don't need more vendors. They need better partners.

Every additional supplier adds freight, scheduling, communication, and opportunities for delays.

That's why more manufacturers are consolidating work with providers offering multiple precision grinding services under one roof.

As Nelly Ramirez from Grind Lap Industries says:
"Reliable vendors and partners are very difficult to come by."

When one trusted partner can handle multiple operations - and coordinate the rest - everyone saves time.

When manufacturers need flat, precise surfaces, two processes are often considered: Blanchard Grinding and Lapping.

While both improve flatness and surface quality, they serve very different purposes.

✔️ Blanchard grinding excels at rapid material removal and producing consistent flatness on large parts.

✔️ Lapping delivers ultra-tight tolerances and mirror-like finishes for the most demanding applications.

The real advantage often comes from using both processes together.

Blanchard grinding quickly brings a part close to specification, while lapping provides the final refinement needed for extreme precision.

In our latest article, we break down:

• How each process works

• Typical tolerances and surface finishes

• Speed and cost considerations

• Industry applications

• Why combining both processes can improve efficiency and reduce costs
