Future WMMBA Trail Coordinators in training.

The West Michigan Mountain Bike Alliance was proud to host the East Grand Rapids Middle School Day of Caring at the Fred Bunn Multi Use Trail System.

42 students joined us for a hands-on day focused on trail stewardship, trail maintenance, tool safety, and giving back to the outdoor spaces our community enjoys every day.

The group tackled trimming back the trail corridor, improving trail tread, and working on drainage projects that help keep trails sustainable and rideable for all users.

Events like this are about more than trail work. They help build leadership, community ownership, and the next generation of outdoor stewards and volunteers.

Huge thanks to the students, staff, and volunteers who showed up ready to work and learn. The future of our trails is bright.

Dragon Trail Maintenance Project – Double Header Work Days

We have a MAJOR Maintenance Project on Section 7 — and we need the WMMBA volunteer community to show up strong.

We’re running two Saturdays in a row, focused on getting a major section of trail repaired. With a solid turnout, we can move a huge amount of dirt and make real progress fast.

What’s happening:
Two consecutive Saturday workdays

Focus: Section 7 – Dragon Trail

After-work hangout both days at Dragon Adventures Basecamp for food and beverages courtesy of Remax United.

What we need:
We’re aiming for 30+ volunteers each day

Bring:
Shovels
Wheelbarrows
Gloves

Let’s make both Saturdays count. Show up!

Please note - the trail work meeting location is:
HC4P+8W5 Big Prairie, Michigan. Putting that text in your mapping software will get you to the location just off M-20 by section 7.

The WMMBA is incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers supporting trail maintenance across all 17 trail systems. WMMBA Trail Coordinators and Trail Adopters are critically important to keeping trails safe, sustainable, and fun to ride.

These volunteers do far more than basic maintenance. They help identify and solve trail issues, support improvement projects, coordinate volunteer efforts, monitor trail conditions, organize events and play a huge role in making our trail systems awesome places to ride, run, hike, and explore. Their work directly impacts the long-term sustainability and quality of trails across West Michigan.

A special thank you to the new volunteers stepping up this year to fill these roles:
Jeff Hill, Steve Gray, Gary Albrecht, the sons of Penny Vandenhout, Team Switchback, Shane Wiersma, Rogue Racing, and Armen Kassouni.

Your willingness to give back makes a real difference and helps strengthen the entire trail community.

We still have multiple open Trail Coordinator and Trail Adopter positions available. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help support local trails, email [email protected]

Johnson Park keeps getting better every week. Trail builders are making great progress toward our anticipated Grand Opening, with current focus areas on the inner adaptive green loop and the main trailhead access near the parking lot.

If you stop by the scenic drive to check out progress, please respect all trail closure signage and heavy equipment operations so builders can stay focused and everyone stays safe.

And thanks to incredible community support of the Kent County Parks Foundation fundraising campaign, Johnson Park is now growing from the originally planned 6 miles to 8 miles of trail! The fundraising campaign remains active as we continue building a long-term maintenance endowment to support the future of the trail system.

Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer opportunities and more updates as we get closer to celebrating opening day with our friends at Kent County Parks Department

Trail Access Update: Cannonsburg State Game Area.

Important Update – 5 Mile Access.
A connection near 5 Mile is not part of the official trail system and has not been approved by the DNR. A private landowner has also requested that riders stop using this connection. Please follow posted signage and use 5 mile road to connect to Dursum Trail.
Ride smart. Respect private property. Use caution on public roadways. We are actively exploring two connection opportunities and waiting for proposal requirements from the DNR.

About Cannonsburg State Game Area:
The mission of WMMBA is simple: maintain and improve trails for everyone. Cannonsburg is one of the most popular systems we support—and it comes with unique responsibilities.
Unlike DNR-managed recreational areas such as Yankee Springs or Ionia Recreation Area, this is a state game area, which means different rules, regulations, and expectations for use and maintenance.

Access is our #1 priority. We are actively working toward an updated land use agreement with the DNR through multiple meetings, site visits, and ongoing engagement.

To support that effort, all riders can help by following these guidelines:
1. Ride only on sanctioned, official trails open to biking
2. Do not ride unsanctioned or foot-traffic-only trails
3. Respect posted seasonal hunting closures

We appreciate everyone doing their part to protect access today and for the future. Email [email protected] with questions.

Wahlfield Trail - WMMBA continues to grow as a cherished green space and destination for outdoor recreation in Kent County. With the addition of The Berry Patch Kid Loop following the North Parking Lot expansion, the trail system is evolving to better serve riders and families from across the region.

Last week, dedicated WMMBA volunteers partnered with 906 Adventure Team Grand Rapids for a youth-focused trail day centered on upgrades to the kid loop.

It is one of many youth-focused trail maintenance and development efforts planned as part of WMMBA’s 2026 initiative to create more opportunities for young riders to connect with trails, build skills, and enjoy the outdoors.

Huge thanks to everyone who continues investing time, energy, and passion into making Wahlfield Park an awesome place to ride.
