Calliandra calothyrsus is a high-protein (20–25% crude protein) fodder supplement for ruminants like cows, goats, and sheep. It boosts milk production, increases weight gain, improves rumen fermentation, and reduces enteric methane emissions. Because it contains tannins, it should be fed in moderation (typically 20–40% of the diet)
*Key Benefits to Animals*
✔️Nutritional Boost: Acts as a vital protein supplement when livestock graze on low-quality grasses (e.g., Napier grass), helping animals meet their nutritional requirements.
✔️Enhanced Productivity:
📌Dairy: Directly associated with increased milk yield and higher butterfat content.
📌Growth: Supports better weight gain in young livestock.
✔️Health & Immunity:
📌Parasite Resistance: Evidence suggests it can help build resistance to common parasites like barber's pole worm in sheep and goats.
📌Reproductive Health: Studies in goats have shown reduced incidence of abortion and higher offspring yield.
✔️Environmental/Digestive Impact:
📌Methane Reduction: Feeding calliandra can significantly reduce enteric methane emissions from ruminants, contributing to more climate-friendly farming.
📌Rumen Health: The condensed tannins can protect dietary protein from excessive breakdown in the rumen, making more protein available for the animal to absorb.
