Structural Steel Connection Analysis in IDEA StatiCa
This time, we analysed a stiffened steel connection in IDEA StatiCa Connection, focusing on the interaction between the main beam, vertical members, stiffening elements, plates and bolted components.
The connection geometry may look relatively compact, but several load paths come together in one location. This makes a detailed connection analysis important to understand how forces are distributed through the individual components.
🔹 What was checked:
• Structural members and connection plates
• Stiffening elements
• Bolt forces and interaction
• Welded components
• Stress distribution across the connection
• Overall structural response under the governing load combination
The IDEA StatiCa results provide a clear picture of where stresses are concentrated and how effectively the stiffeners participate in transferring the applied forces.
The analysis also helps avoid unnecessary reinforcement — adding material where it is not structurally required can make a connection more expensive without improving its actual performance.
The goal is not simply to make a connection stronger.
The goal is to make it work efficiently.
From geometry → load transfer → stress distribution → final verification.
That is where detailed connection analysis adds real value to structural steel design.
