THE TRUTH ABOUT THE OPITO RIGGER PATHWAY — AND THE BETTER OPTION AVAILABLE THROUGH IMITARS
In Trinidad & Tobago, many riggers and employers are not fully aware of how the OPITO system works — especially what happens when a certificate expires.
(I am subjected to correction if any local training provider offers additional flexibility within their own internal policies.)
Here is the real, verified truth — and the better alternative available through IMITARS.
1️⃣ The OPITO Reality
If your OPITO Rigger Level 3 certificate expires — even by 1 day — you must restart at Level 1.
No grace period.
No refresher.
No shortcut.
This means:
Loss of competence status
Redo Level 1
Redo the entire logbook
Wait 6–12 months before Level 3 again
More cost, more downtime
This is OPITO’s global rule.
2️⃣ The OPITO Pathway Is Long
Level 1 → Logbook (6–12 months) → Level 3
Level 1 is introductory only.
You cannot move to Level 3 until the full logbook and workplace evidence are completed.
3️⃣ The Smarter Alternative: NTA MELO2035 TTNVQ Level 2 Rigging
Offered by IMITARS International Maintenance Inspection Training & Rigging Services
This is a full competence qualification, covering:
✔ Rigging
✔ Signalling
✔ Lift planning
✔ Inspections
✔ HSE
✔ Communication
✔ Reporting
Recognized across Energy, Construction, Ports, Transport, Manufacturing & Maritime.
Accepted by major operators in Trinidad & Tobago as equivalent to OPITO Level 1.
4️⃣ The Game‑Changer
With NTA Level 2, you can:
⭐ Go directly to OPITO Level 3 (with employer endorsement)
No OPITO Level 1
No OPITO logbook
No 6–12 month wait
No grace‑period risk
Because NTA Level 2 is a competence qualification, not just classroom training.
5️⃣ The NTA Certificate Never Expires
Once the process is completed, your NTA Level 2 certificate is valid for life.
No renewal.
No expiry.
No risk of losing your qualification.
6️⃣ Two Job Roles — One Qualification
NTA Level 2 gives you dual competence:
✔ Certified Rigger
✔ Certified Signaller / Banksman
This increases your:
Employability
Flexibility
Day‑rate potential
Opportunities across industries
Companies prefer multi‑skilled workers — and NTA Level 2 delivers exactly that.
7️⃣ Early Bird Special — Limited Spots
**Book now and get the Early Bird Special:
💰 $8,500 TTD**
Includes:
Two job roles
Lifetime certification
Direct access to OPITO Level 3
Strong multi‑disciplinary foundation
The Bottom Line
OPITO is a strong system — but it is slow, expensive, and unforgiving.
If your Level 3 expires, you start over.
NTA Level 2 gives you a stronger, broader competence qualification AND keeps the door open to OPITO Level 3 at any time — with a certificate that never expires and dual‑role capability.
IMITARS continues to lead the way in rigging competence development in Trinidad & Tobago.

NTA MELO Rigging & Signalling vs OPITO Rigger — Understanding the Difference + Key Benefits

In Trinidad & Tobago, many companies and professionals ask how the NTA MELO2035 TTNVQ Level 2 Rigging & Signalling qualification compares to OPITO Rigger Levels 1 & 3.

Here is a clear, industry‑focused breakdown to help supervisors, HSE teams, and HR departments make informed decisions.

🔧 NTA MELO2035 – TTNVQ Level 2 (Rigging & Signalling)

A full competence qualification covering:
Rigging operations
Signalling / Banksman duties
Lift planning
Pre‑use inspections
Manual handling
HSE procedures
Emergency response
Workplace communication
Technical reporting

Recognized across Energy, Construction, Ports, Transport, Manufacturing, and Maritime, and accepted by BPTT as equivalent to OPITO Level 1 for entry-level rigging.

🔧 OPITO Rigger Levels 1 & 3
OPITO Rigger Level 1
Introductory training only
No workplace assessment
Not a competence qualification
OPITO Rigger Level 3
Competence assessment for experienced riggers
Focuses mainly on rigging tasks
🔍 Key Takeaway

NTA MELO2035 TTNVQ Level 2 is a broader, more comprehensive competence qualification than OPITO Level 1, and aligns more closely with OPITO Level 3 in terms of workplace capability.

For companies seeking riggers who can plan lifts, signal, inspect, communicate, and operate safely, the NTA Level 2 provides a stronger, multi‑disciplinary foundation.

And even though BPTT accepts it at the OPITO Level 1 entry point, the quality and depth of training delivered under the NTA Level 2 framework is significantly higher, giving candidates a more complete and job‑ready skill set.

✨ IMITARS – 10th Anniversary

Today, 16 April 2026, marks 10 years since IMITARS was born — a journey that began from one of the toughest moments of my life.

On 11 March 2016, at age 45, I was laid off after the closure of ArcelorMittal Point Lisas, ending 22 years of service, including 12 years as a Crane Operations Supervisor.

With all my experience rooted in heavy equipment operation and lifting, opportunities were extremely limited.

I had two choices: remain stuck… or step out of my comfort zone.

On 16 April 2016, driven by faith, necessity, and determination — IMITARS was formed.

First, I thank the Creator for guidance, strength, and provision throughout this journey.

I also want to apologize to my family for my absence — the long days, late nights, and sacrifices you endured. No one truly prepares you for the reality that building a business requires 24/7 dedication — mentally, physically, and emotionally.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and unwavering support.

To all the companies, clients, and partners who believed in IMITARS from day one —Thank you.

Thank you for trusting our training, inspections, and our commitment to safety and excellence.

As we celebrate 10 years, I stand humbled, grateful, and proud of how far we’ve come.

IMITARS remains committed to delivering the highest quality of service and raising industry standards across Trinidad & Tobago and the region.

Thank you for 10 years of support.

Here’s to the next decade of growth, service, and excellence.
