Honing is an IMPORTANT abrasive machining process usually done after the engine's block has been bored. A rotating tool carrying abrasives removes metal from the interior surface of a bore or cylinder.The main purpose is to finish the surface to a particular diameter and geometric cylindrical shape. It's usually a secondary machining operation that finishes a part, relieves stress, or corrects some feature such as out-of-round, undersized tapers, or misaligned bores. This process also produces a "cross-hatch" pattern usually at 45 degree angles alongside the cylinder's wall to ensure proper lubrication and ring seal of pistons in cylinders.
Typical applications are the finishing of cylinders for internal combustion engines, air bearing spindles and gears. There are many types of hones, but all consist of one or more abrasive stones that are held under pressure against the surface they are working on.

Boring of an extremely rare Nissan RB30 engine block. There are only two ways to increase an engine’s displacement: You can bore it (engine boring increases the cylinder diameters) or you can stroke it (engine stroking increases the crankshaft stroke). The Bore or cylinder bore is a part of a piston engine. The bore also represents the size, in terms of diameter, of the cylinder in which a piston travels. The value of a cylinders bore, and stroke, is used to establish the displacement of an engine.
As engines get used, over time their cylinders become worn out. This wear and tear results from the ongoing friction stresses created from the piston, the piston rings and the combustion of the engine. During a major rebuild, boring out and honing the engine cylinders provides new life to the engine parts and reduces combustion problems from deposits.
