Very smart idea needed a very smart player.
A Swedish startup called Corvid Cleaning is testing a creative way to reduce litter by training wild crows to pick up cigarette butts. Using a special machine, the birds drop pieces of trash into a slot and receive a food reward in return. The project focuses on New Caledonian crows, which are known for their advanced problem solving abilities. Sweden discards more than a billion cigarette butts each year, and this method could lower cleanup costs and reduce plastic pollution. Early results show promise and highlight how animal intelligence can support environmental solutions in practical and unexpected ways.
