Mixed Reality Devices in Thailand: What NBTC Approval Do You Actually Need?

Mixed Reality (MR) headsets like HoloLens and Vision Pro are multi-radio devices — combining Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and in some models cellular. Each radio technology requires its own NBTC certification before the device can be legally imported or sold in Thailand.

The good news: NBTC issues a single certificate covering all technologies in one device. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth qualify for SDoC (~1 week). If the device also includes LTE/5G, the whole unit moves to Class B (~6 weeks) — but only one application is submitted.

Importing MR devices for enterprise, healthcare, or education projects in Thailand? Start with a cert-type check — Zergo can confirm your path before you commit to a timeline.

RLAN vs. Wi-Fi: Why the Distinction Matters in Regulation
RLAN (Radio Local Area Network) is the technical and regulatory term for short-range wireless networking via radio frequency. In everyday life we call it Wi-Fi — but in official frameworks, RLAN is what appears in law.

RLAN (the technical name): used by regulators like NBTC when writing official frequency allocation rules, safety standards, and certification requirements for the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands.

Wi-Fi (the commercial brand): a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, certifying that RLAN equipment from different manufacturers has been tested for interoperability.

Common deployment environments:
Home broadband / Enterprise networks / Smart building infrastructure / Retail & hospitality / Indoor IoT systems

Zigbee in IoT: The Technology — and Its NBTC Compliance Path

Zigbee is a low-power mesh wireless protocol operating at 2.4 GHz, widely used in smart home systems, industrial automation, and building management — wherever battery-powered sensors need to communicate reliably across dozens of nodes.

For the Thai market: Zigbee devices operating at 2.4 GHz qualify for the SDoC pathway — the fastest NBTC approval route at approximately 1 week from submission. No physical sample needs to be sent to Thailand; existing FCC or CE test reports are accepted.

Launching a Zigbee-based product in Thailand? SDoC is your starting point — and Zergo can take it from there.

TCU in Vehicles: What It Does — and What NBTC Approval It Needs

A Telematics Control Unit (TCU) is the cellular brain of a connected vehicle — managing GPS tracking, remote diagnostics, over-the-air updates, and emergency call (eCall) functions via 4G/LTE or 5G.

Because TCUs operate on licensed cellular frequency bands (LTE/5G), they fall under NBTC Class B certification — the highest level of NBTC approval, requiring an accredited lab test report and formal review before the unit can be imported or installed in vehicles sold in Thailand.

If your vehicle platform or fleet solution includes an embedded cellular module — even from a Tier 1 supplier — NBTC Class B approval is required before it reaches the Thai market. Existing FCC or CE reports can support the application.

What Is SDoC and Which Devices Require It?
SDoC (Supplier's Declaration of Conformity) is a self-declaration pathway under NBTC. The supplier confirms product compliance with applicable technical standards — no full third-party registration required.

4 Common Device Categories Under SDoC:
1. Wi-Fi & WLAN — routers, access points, mesh nodes (NBTC TS 1012)
2. Bluetooth Gadgets — earbuds, speakers, smartwatches, fitness trackers (NBTC TS 1025)
3. Short-Range Devices (SRD) — car key fobs, smart keys, RC models (NBTC TS 1025)
4. Unlicensed Low-Power RFID/NFC — POS terminals, handheld RFID readers, e-Passports (NBTC TS 1010)

Note: SDoC applies only to device categories specifically designated by NBTC. Higher-power variants in the same category (e.g., high-power RFID readers) may require Class A registration instead.

What is NBTC?
NBTC — the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission — is Thailand's independent regulatory body overseeing all broadcasting and telecommunications activity in the country.

Core mandates:
1. Frequency allocation & licensing — assigns and manages spectrum to prevent interference across users and industries
2. Supervision of broadcasting & telecom — oversees TV, radio, mobile networks, and internet services
3. Consumer protection — enforces fair treatment standards between service providers and end users
4. Digital & innovation policy — supports national development in 5G, IoT, and emerging technologies
5. Communication security — prevents illegal frequency use and protects critical national infrastructure

For any business dealing in wireless devices, telecom equipment, or connected products in Thailand, understanding NBTC's scope is the starting point for market compliance.
