History Corner

The Laibach History
Laibach is a Slovenian avant-garde music group associated with the industrial, martial, and neoclassical genres. Formed in 1980 in the mining town of Trbovlje, Slovenia (at the time the SR Slovenia within Yugoslavia), Laibach represents the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) artist collective, a group which Laibach co-founded in 1984.

From the early days, the band was subject to controversies and bans due to their use of iconography with parodies and pastiches of elements from totalitarianism, nationalism and militarism, a concept they have preserved throughout their career.

Censored in Yugoslavia, receiving a dissident status and a cult following in their home country, the band embarked on international tours and gradually acquired international fame, which led to wider acceptance by Yugoslav public and to attention of the country's mainstream media.

After Slovenia became independent in 1991, Laibach's status in the country has turned from rejection by a part of the public to promotion into a national cultural icon.

A historic encounter between Laibach and the legacy of Bijelo Dugme.

Following its initial digital release, DIE KANONE now gets a physical release featuring remixes by DIE KRUPPS, THE LINCOLNSHIRE POACHER & BLACK DOT, plus a live version with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. The CD also includes the iTurk Symphonic Mix.

Laibach reinterpret Bijelo Dugme’s 1974 debut single, exploring industry, technology, militarisation and the cycles of history.

On 4 September at Magazin Grando, MI KUJEMO BODOČNOST / WE FORGE THE FUTURE will revisit the performance that sparked one of Yugoslavia’s biggest cultural scandals in 1983, alongside new interpretations of material originally created for the banned 1980 project Alternative to Slovenian Culture.

Ob zaključku razstave bo v petek, 4. septembra ob 20. uri v Magazin Grando ponovno oživela ena najbolj prelomnih zgodb skupine. Večer bodo obogatile tudi nove interpretacije skladb, pripravljenih za projekt Alternativa slovenski kulturi, ki naj bi bil prvič izveden v Trbovljah leta 1980, a je bil še pred izvedbo prepovedan.
