Odsek za nanostrukturne materiale združuje strokovnjake in mlade raziskovalce z različnih, komplementarnih področij. S temeljnimi in aplikativnimi raziskavami se uveljavlja na najbolj aktualnih področjih tehnike, daje raziskovalno in razvojno podporo slovenskim podjetjem, sodeluje v dveh centrih odličnosti in se uspešno vključuje v evropski raziskovalni program. Odsek razpolaga z vrhunsko raziskovalno opremo za pripravo vzorcev, za magnetne in električne meritve in elektronsko mikroskopijo.

On 12., and 13. March, the Department for Nanostructured Materials took part in the GENIUS (ERA-MIN3) project meeting in Madrid. It was a great opportunity to discuss progress, share results, and plan the next steps in developing sustainable permanent magnet materials.

Projekt AddMag je bil izbran med uspešne projekte (»success stories«) programa M-ERA.Net, kar potrjuje njegovo znanstveno odličnost in močan industrijski vpliv na področju naprednih magnetnih materialov. Projekt, financiran v okviru M-ERA.Net, je dokazal, da je z aditivno proizvodnjo mogoče izdelati trajne magnete z odličnimi magnetnimi lastnostmi, visoko dimenzijsko natančnostjo in bistveno boljšo trajnostjo v primerjavi s konvencionalnimi proizvodnimi postopki.
Pri projektu je sodelovala tudi raziskovalna skupina K7 Instituta »Jožef Stefan« pod vodstvom dr. Benjamina Podmiljšaka, ki je pomembno prispevala k razvoju in validaciji inovativnih pristopov za aditivno izdelavo magnetnih materialov ter k demonstraciji industrijsko relevantnih primerov uporabe.
Uvrstitev med uspešne projekte M-ERA.Net poudarja pomen mednarodnega sodelovanja pri razvoju rešitev, ki podpirajo krožno gospodarstvo, zmanjšujejo odvisnost od primarnih virov redkih zemelj in krepijo strateško avtonomijo Evrope na področju trajnih magnetov.

The Department for Nanostructured Materials, K7, at the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) has successfully secured funding under the RSF IND Programme (Pillar IV – Innovation) for the project iRAPTOR: Omni-Directional Magnetic Field-Controlled 3D Printing Device. The one-year project, led by Dr. Muhammad Shahid Arshad, is supported with funding of €50,000 and focuses on advancing functional additive manufacturing of magnetic materials.
The iRAPTOR project aims to develop a novel fused-deposition modeling (FDM) print head equipped with a compact, water-cooled, omnidirectional electromagnet system and integrated Hall-probe sensing. This enables precise, real-time control and verification of magnetic field orientation during printing, allowing voxel-level alignment of anisotropic hard-magnetic particles. The result is polymer-bonded magnets with significantly enhanced remanence and tailored multipolar magnetization patterns.
The technology will be validated on motor-relevant components, including BLDC motor parts, in collaboration with industrial partner Kolektor Mobility and research partner CIM-UPC (Spain). Beyond technical validation, the project also supports intellectual property protection and commercialization activities, strengthening our department’s role in innovation, sustainable manufacturing, and advanced magnetic materials.

Nik je prejemnik fakultetne Prešernove nagrade za leto 2025 za magistrsko delo »Mineraloška, kristalografska in geokemična analiza wulfenitnih zrn iz rudnika Mežica«.
V okviru dela je s pomočjo naprednih mikroskopskih, spektroskopskih in difrakcijskih metod raziskoval mehanizme rasti wulfenitnih kristalov iz Mežice. Rezultati so bili objavljeni tudi v reviji Scientific Reports.

Prvič v zgodovini Slovenije praznujemo državni praznik Dan znanosti, ki je namenjen promociji in prepoznavanju pomembnosti znanosti za razvoj družbe.

Kot so napisali na MVZI, je namen dneva znanosti:
- povečati prepoznavnost znanosti,
- jo še bolj približati slovenski javnosti,
- krepiti znanje kot eno temeljnih vrednot slovenske družbe.

10. november je tudi dan, ko je umrl baron Žiga Zois, slovenski razsvetljenec, gospodarstvenik, pisatelj, naravoslovec in mecen. Ta dan je tudi Unescov svetovni dan znanosti za mir in razvoj.

Our latest article from the Nanomedicine group has been published in Biomaterials Advances!
Five research groups joined forces to develop a novel hybrid drug delivery system for nucleic acid therapeutics. By combining genipin-spermine-glycine nanoparticles with biomimetic erythrocyte membrane vesicles, we achieved an efficient and biocompatible carrier for siRNA delivery. Our system demonstrated:
•Excellent siRNA binding and protection against degradation
•Enhanced cellular uptake and gene silencing efficiency in vitro
•Minimal cytotoxicity and improved storage stability

Urban Komelj, dijak Gimnazije Vič, je na Odseku za nanostrukturne materiale raziskoval »Membranske vezikle z enkapsulirano siRNK za gensko terapijo in fototermično terapijo raka« pod mentorstvom doc. dr. Nine Kostevšek. 26. septembra 2025 je za svojo raziskovalno nalogo prejel Krkino priznanje za srednješolske raziskovalne naloge. Somentorica na Gimanziji Vič je bila prof. Helena Potočnik Vičar.

🔍 Spotlight on EU Collaboration and GREENE: HaDEA Delegation Visits Stefan Institute
Yesterday, Director . Leon Cizelj, . Sašo Šturm, GREENE coordinator . Kristina Žužek and Zaplotnik of Ljubljana had the honour of welcoming a high-level delegation from the Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) to the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Ljubljana.
The delegation included:

Engelbosch, Head of Department B “Digital, Industry and Space”
Marino, Head of Department A “Health”
Borstnik Gergely, Deputy Head of Unit A3 “Health Research”
The visit offered a valuable platform to exchange on the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s science, technology, and industry sectors. Discussions focused on EU priorities and funding avenues, also in the area of Critical Raw Materials. Kristina Žužek presented GREENE and the project’s contribution to enhancing the sustainability, autonomy and resilience of European industry in the long term.
