What exactly is tensile testing?

Tensile testing is a laboratory procedure used to determine how a material reacts when subjected to a pulling force. The purpose of the test is to evaluate the strength and ductility of the material before it reaches failure. In simple terms, it tells us how much load a material can withstand and how much it can stretch before breaking.

Some of the key values obtained from tensile testing include:
• Yield Strength: The stress at which the material begins to deform permanently
• Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): The maximum stress the material can withstand before failure
• Elongation: The amount the material stretches before fracture, indicating ductility
• Reduction of Area: A measurement of how much the cross-sectional area decreases during failure
• Stress-Strain behaviour: Helps engineers understand how the material performs under loading conditions

In the case of SAS Bars, tensile testing is an essential part of the manufacturing and quality control process. Every batch of SAS high-strength steel bars undergoes rigorous tensile testing to verify that the mechanical properties meet the required specifications and international standards such as the European Technical Approval (ETA) and the National Technical Approval from Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt)

This gives engineers, consultants, and contractors confidence that the supplied bars meet the required performance criteria for critical applications.

Different processes. Different material behaviour. Different engineering outcomes.

From a manufacturing and performance perspective, hot rolling and cold rolling are fundamentally different processes with distinct applications.

While both processes start from the same raw steel, the different manufacturing processes significantly affects the material’s behavior, mechanical properties and application suitability.

Hot Rolled Thread Bars
Hot rolling takes place at temperatures above the steel’s recrystallisation temperature ( >1200°C).

As the material cools naturally, its microstructure is normalised, resulting in:
• Good ductility
• Better toughness
• Improved elongation properties
• Reduced internal metallurgy stresses[PL1]

Hot rolled bars typically have a rougher finish and wider tolerances, making them ideal for structural and heavy-duty applications where toughness and material performance are prioritised over surface appearances.

Cold Rolled / Cold Finished Thread Bars
Cold finished steel is processed further at room temperatures, though processes such as annealing and/or tempers rolling process.

This changes the steel’s mechanical properties, resulting in:
• Higher yield strength
• Tighter dimensional tolerances
• Smoother surface finish

Furthermore, cold rolled bars are generally more expensive than hot rolled thread bars due to the additional processing steps. The cold rolled bars also becomes less ductile and has lower elongation. This is why cold finished bars are commonly used in applications requiring higher dimensional precision and tighter tolerances.

In engineering, material selection is never just about strength. The manufacturing process itself directly influences ductility, toughness, elongation, thread formation, and long-term structural behaviour.

Understanding these differences helps engineers and contractors select the right material for the right application. At Stahlwerk Annahütte Max Aicher GmbH & Co. KG, we specialise in the production of hot rolled fully threaded bars. That means that the threaded profile ribs are already produced in one single production process of the hot rolling process.

What is a threaded bar?

One common misunderstanding we get regularly is a threaded bar is just a rebar. We are here to debunk the myth now.

Stahlwerk Annahuette (SAH) specialises in the production of hot rolled fully threadable steel bars. That means, that the threaded profile ribs are already produced in one single production process of the hot rolling process. The rib profile is threadable over the bar’s entire length.

SAS threaded bar ribs are designed as continuous threads for easier mechanical connection. These ribs are ‘screwable’ and continuous along the entire length of the bar which allows a load transmission by fastening elements like nuts and couplers. This design allows the bar to be cut and coupled at any length without the need for additional thread machining. These ribs also fulfill the common requirements of bond with concrete.

Key Geometry Characteristics of Threaded Bars:
➖ Continuous thread profile along the full bar length
➖ Alternating rib pattern forming a coarse hot-rolled thread and possesses site proven “self-cleaning” ability
➖ Symmetrical ribs to allow loading in both directions
➖ Larger pitch compared to normal rebar ribs which means better bond with concrete
➖ Designed for easier mechanical connection (couplers, anchor nuts) without the need for additional cut thread

Understanding the functionality of a thread bar can improve the productivity and safety on sites.

In fatigue-critical applications, component performance is governed not only by static strength, but also durability under high load cycles.

The newly developed Fatigue Coupler for our SAS 500/550 Ø75 mm has been engineered and validated to enhance performance under cyclic loading conditions.

A key performance improvement lies in its fatigue behaviour:
➡️ Fatigue strength increased from Δσ = 40 MPa to Δσ = 60 MPa
➡️ Corresponding load cycles improved from N = 2 × 10⁶ to approximately N = 15 × 10⁶ (at Δσ = 40 MPa)

These results highlight the coupler’s capability in heavy-duty, large-diameter applications. By focusing on fatigue-critical design parameters, this solution supports durability and reliability where it matters most.

If fatigue performance is a key design consideration in your project, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate. Feel free to connect and contact us,

Do coarse threads really lead to higher slip losses in PT systems?

Based on our internal testing, the results show that the difference in slip between different thread types and manufacturers is marginal. Even systems with coarse threads perform comparably when it comes to slip behaviour.

Contrary to popular belief that coarse threads have far less favorable slip values, the difference between different manufacturers and type of thread is general marginal after 3 stressing cycles.

By moving from a single stressing cycle to multiple stressing cycles:
Slip can be reduced from approximately 1.5–2.0 mm down to as low as 0.2–0.9 mm which is a reduction of up to 80% in slip losses!

📌 Design note according to EN 1992-1-1:
The maximum recommended stressing force is typically limited to the lower of:
- 0.8 × fpk
- 0.9 × fp0.1k (or up to 0.95 × fp0.1k under controlled conditions)

💡 Key takeaway:
Instead of focusing on thread type, focus on proper stressing procedures, especially multiple stressing cycles, to significantly improve prestress efficiency.
