♻️ What happens to the plastic in a discarded air-conditioner?

Under Singapore NEA's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for electrical and electronic waste, recovering and recycling materials from end-of-life appliances is an important step towards a more circular economy.

At SP Advanced Materials Technology Centre (AMTC), we're exploring how recycled plastics from components such as air-conditioner housings, fan blades, and coolers can be processed and incorporated into cementitious materials, reducing the use of virgin raw materials while supporting a more circular Built Environment.

Join us as we take you behind the scenes—from shredding and sieving to mixing, casting, curing, and testing—this is technology translation in action.

Because sometimes, innovation isn't about creating something new—it's about creating new value from them. 🌱

But what if this "burnt waste" could help build a more sustainable future?

Biochar is one of the most promising carbon-rich materials in the circular economy. Produced from biomass through pyrolysis, it has the unique ability to store carbon for decades while giving waste a second life.

At SP Advanced Materials Technology Centre (AMTC), we've successfully developed biochar-incorporated mortar, where biochar partially replaces cement—reducing cement consumption, repurposing waste materials, and supporting long-term carbon storage in construction materials.

At SP Advanced Materials Technology Centre (AMTC), our team is turning e-waste into a valuable resource—without relying on traditional, hazardous methods like cyanide!

Here’s a quick look at our e-waste recovery process in action:
1️⃣ XRF Analysis: Non-destructive testing to measure gold content.
2️⃣ Eco-Friendly Dissolution: Heating our patented chemical solution to selectively dissolve only the gold. (also available for silver and palladium!)
3️⃣ Filtration & Measurement: Using ICP-OES plasma technology for precise concentration analysis.

From hands-on research in sustainable materials to securing a scholarship with NUS! 🌟

Meet Moe Thet Mon (Class of 2026), one of AMTC most inspiring interns from the School of Architecture & the Built Environment (ABE). During her internship as a Research Assistant, Moe Thet Mon worked on producing lightweight, thermal-insulation plaster using sustainable materials — gaining valuable experience in lab research, industry networking, and professional communication along the way.

"AMTC is where I met mentors and supervisors who believed in me even when I doubted myself... Thank you, AMTC, for being such an important part of my journey." 💓
